Oh I was also not really aware of him and just noticed him by other people too. They described him as bitter and overrated, also as a pretty whiny and misantrophical guy. I never judged him and never tried to, but his art and messages are a bit questionable and he has gained a pretty big internet fuzz around stuff that makes no sense to me.
I shouldn't care about fame and internet popularity, but just thinking about how that can happen can drive me a bit nuts... how can stuff like his get so much attention while real good artists get ignored.

There was a huuge answer but it started to be hard to read\understand, so i erased it, lol.
I wanted to say that quality of work does not matter that much in such things as "popularity". Especially on internet galleries. At least not very often. Artists usually live in their own worlds, thinking that drawing their favorite stuff really good wil make them popular, while the rest of the crowd may have a different opinion.
I also think that social humour, people anr relationships between them is the most popular subject these days (look how popular Simpsons\Family Guy\South Park are while some good cartoons disappeared forever). Even horror genre is not all about monsters and MAGIC anymore. Remeber that short about "boobies that disappeared"? I watch new horror movies all days and i'm already sick of such "focused on normal people" kinds of stuff.
This was also the reason why i know nothing about that artists. He draws people and relationships. No monsters. No ESCAPISM!
But yeah...it's popular.

Honestly, I personally think he's just overrated in general. I don't use that word unless I feel it is really deserved, but I think people either give him too much crap and attention. I've had friends explain to me why they don't care for him as an artist and or person, to which I can sympathize with to an extent. I think the hate band wagon mostly comes from just that, people hearing other people's opinions about the guy and automatically making their opinion about the guy. I've never looked into it myself because drama and aspersions is something I try to avoid these days. Whether he truly is as bad as people say is really none of my concern.

I can't believe Shake It/Shake Dimension didn't get mor attention. Fun and unintrusive motion control, amazing art direction, and ideal difficulty curve and replay value, what's not to like?
