I can't think of a logical explanation as to why his armor can take so many bullets, other than the fact that it was specifically designed to protect him from plasma-type weapons (the same kind of weapon mounted on his wrist)

Actually, part of it is simply that their skin is naturally tough.Β  Remember that this is a race that can jump three times their height, fall ten times their height and land on their feet without injury, can shatter concrete with their bare hands, survive radiation levels that would be fatal to a human, is practically immune to poison and disease, can theoretically live for hundreds or even thousands of years, has blood and saliva that partially neutralizes the acid blood of a xenomorph (which is what leads some people to the theory that the Predators were also "uplifted" by the Engineers), and so on.

Basically, handguns?Β  Forget about it.Β  If it isn't a .357 Magnum or larger, it probably wouldn't even get through their SKIN.Β  It takes shotguns at close range, rifle rounds, or very high-caliber handguns.Β  For reference, Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover's character) was using a Desert Eagle (.50 caliber), and later a 12ga shotgun.Β  Jerry Lambert (Bill Paxton's character) was using a Sig Sauer P226 (9mm).Β  You'll notice Jerry fired more than one magazine, and even the ones that didn't hit the Predator's armor still didn't make it bleed.Β  (I know the Predator was using his stealth field, and probably some bullets missed completely, but we're talking 20-30 shots... surely ALL of them didn't hit the armor plates on the shoulder and forearms.)

And he has a frigging sniper rifle mounted on his shoulder that fires incendiary type rounds at his target. The first guy lost his arm.

Naturally the smart thing to do would be to camouflage yourself by not having any weapons, and as soon as he turns around remove his helmet and (not sure if this would work against a predator) snap his neck

Sounds like a reasonable plan.Β  After all, Danny Glover was able to remove that one's mask, so they're obviously not impossible for a human to remove.Β  Having said that, in the comics at least, the Predators DO have access to full-coverage environmentally-sealed armor for special missions, so if they're wearing THAT armor, the plan to remove their helmet might not work so well.Β  It's pretty rare, though, as far as I know, and only the most experienced warriors are even allowed to wear it.Β  (If the mission is dangerous enough to require that armor, then it's dangerous enough to require their best warriors.)

Their most vulnerable points, canonically, are the throat and the belly, and they're clearly aware of this, which is why they all wear that "collar" around their necks.Β  I'm sure the bone and muscle are still thicker and/or denser than on humans, so it might be a little harder to break.Β  (The collar is mostly there to prevent their throat from being slashed.Β  Just like a human, they can bleed to death if you sever the jugular.)Β  Your plan will only work once, though, if there are any witnesses.Β  The Predators will spread the word that you don't fight honorably, and won't turn their back on you again.

BTW, even the Predators call it a "plasma caster".Β  So their "sniper rifle" is an energy weapon.Β  Quite logical; if you're going to be isolated, far away from supply lines, you don't want a weapon that relies on ammunition (or at least a weapon that is very conservative with ammunition and/or has a large magazine), since you may not be able to resupply for a long time.

Not all of them opposed humanity from what I understand. I saw one Predator film where the "good" Predator tried to help a human survivor escape the planet.

Which leads me to believe he could have been a "traitor" or didn't believe the same philosophy that other Predators did, being that it was honorable to kill what he probably believed to be an innocent species who were at war with extraterrestrials who they only attacked in self-defense.

Not entirely sure how the first Predator arrived on Earth. It doesn't seem very likely that he attacked the humans because they invaded his planet, rather he believed they were dishonorable in their taste in weapons. (Hence why he uses his wrist swords and only uses his plasma cannon when outnumbered) It's pretty easy to make an inference on how the others arrived. After crash landing he most likely sent an SOS to be rescued, but after the conclusion of the first Predator movie the so-called "search party" arrived some time later.

The Predators are likely highly intelligent, as they are able to record audio for playback and learn our language very quickly after a thorough analysis of the recording. Not to mention they were able to develop the technology that could help them wage a full scale war even against a species that vastly outnumbers them.

The first predator arrived on earth via one-man dropship.Β  It wasn't a crash landing.Β  I don't know if he was going to have to wait for a pick-up or if his ship was capable of taking off again, since it was never seen in the movie.Β  He was here to hunt humans, who the Predators consider challenging prey because of our cunning and unpredictability.Β  As for his choice of wrist blades (k'tic-pa, they call them) and plasma caster, that was just because he didn't expect to need any of his REALLY advanced weapons where he was going.Β  Also, his weapon choice was partly due to his code of honor; for example, if you only had a machete, he would only use his wrist blades.Β  He wouldn't use his plasma caster unless you had guns.

The "good" Predator was being held captive by a "bad blood" (essentially, a sociopathic Predator that doesn't care WHAT he kills, even if it's other Predators).Β  He was set free by the human, and THAT is why he decided to try to help the human escape.Β  Again, it comes back to honor.Β  "You saved my life, so I owe you a favor."

As for "developing the technology"... maybe not, actually. Β Their blood and saliva can partially neutralize the acid of the xenomorphs.Β  For this reason, some people think they were "uplifted" (genetically modified and GIVEN their technology) by the same alien race (the "Engineers") that created the xenomorphs.Β  Because Predator eyesight is in the near-infrared, they would have been at a SEVERE disadvantage when it comes to developing new technology, at least until the first functional prototypes of their bio-masks were developed.

As for "full-scale war against a species that vastly outnumbers them"... you mean the xenomorphs (Aliens)?Β  Nah, that's not a war.Β  They just like hunting them.Β  They'll deliberately drop a few eggs off on a planet that has lifeforms (the Predators have a way of detecting and destroying queen embryos to make sure no queens will hatch), wait a few weeks, and then go hunt them.Β  It's a rite of passage for the adolescents... they're not considered full adults until they've hunted and killed at least one xenomorph (which they call Kainde Amedha… "hard meat").Β  In fact, the rite of passage is called the "Kainde amedha chiva" (hard meat trial).

I wasn't talking about the Xenomorphs. I was talking about the humans. Suffice to say they weren't exactly "at war" in a manner of speaking as there was likely no diplomatic solution to the conflict.

If you've ever played the game Aliens: Colonial Marines you would know the Xeno Queen was a total pushover. You didn't even have to fight her, rather open the airlock and that alone would kill her.

As for the other Xenomorphs, they would likely try to avenge her by driving the remaining humans to extinction.

I'm not sure what happens after that, but I'm pretty sure the humans and Predators called a "truce" until the Xenomorphs are defeated.

I haven't caught up on AVP or AVP II yet so please, no spoilers

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mspears In reply to MartinWalker1997 [2018-12-07 02:14:03 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't sure which one you were talking about, so I assumed it was the Xenomorphs.Β  Oops!

I don't think it's a spoiler to say that AvP was decent, but nothing like the AvP comics which took place on a space colony (that's the real reason the critics panned it; they were expecting Machiko and the rest of the "colony" angle), and as for AvP2... well, I'm only going to say that you almost never see either the Predators or the Xenos in a well-lit area, because it looks like someone was stingy with the costume budget.Β  I don't think the movie was dark to add "suspense"; I think it was dark because they didn't want you to see the zippers.

And yeah, I've played A:CM.Β  Horrible AI which can be partially fixed by changing ONE LETTER in a text file.Β  They misspelled a line in the script so the xenomorph AI is unaware of the environment.Β  That's why it just charges straight at you, instead of behaving like it was meant to.Β  But the alien queen... don't be too sure she died.Β  If they're in orbit and the planet's atmosphere isn't too thick, the queen is tough enough to survive exposure to vacuum (and the heat of re-entry!) long enough to fall onto the planet.

Here's what they messed up.Β  There is a line in the game's config file that says "PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachPawnToTeather".Β  Do you see where they spelled it "TEATHER" instead of "TETHER"?Β  Fix that, and it significantly changes the way the xenomorphs behave.Β  They will actually flank you using vents and holes in the environment, the way they were meant to.Β  It doesn't fix the rest of the issues that players and critics had with the game, but at least it fixes that one thing.

Do you suppose it would be easier to kill the Xeno Queen in AVP?

The thought had crossed my mind before, seeing as how the Queen is more dangerous and resilient than the other Xenomorphs, but as a result is much slower.

And let's not forget the Predators with their state of the art weapons and gadgets.

Just a thought:If a Predator we're to take on the Xeno Queen (without cloaking) who do you think would win?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mspears In reply to MartinWalker1997 [2018-12-13 14:05:04 +0000 UTC]

Remember that the Queen has two extra arms, and is NOT restricted to the nest.Β  As we saw at the end of Aliens, she can rip her ass off.Β  (Okay, she can rip her ovipositor off, if you don't want to be crude.)Β  She's a lot faster than you would expect her to be.Β  You'll get to see for yourself when you watch AVP just how fast she really is.

To answer your question, though: In one of the comics, they were trying to capture a Xeno Queen, and it took at least eight Predators to do it.Β  Although to be fair, they were trying to CAPTURE (not KILL), which is of course going to be harder.

So a single Predator against a Xeno Queen, without his cloaking device?Β  Yeah, I think the queen's still gonna win, though she'll take some damage.Β  A Predator wouldn't bring just his spear, his wrist blades, and his plasma caster to THAT fight.Β  (In the comics, there have been quadruple-wielding Predators... one plasma caster on each shoulder, and a plasma rifle in each hand, in some of their heaviest armor.)
