Description

Modernization concept for the Venerable Thompson M1A2 in the same vein as the M14's Enhanced Battle Rifle (EBR) and M1918 BAR's Heavy Counter Assault Rifle (HCAR). Based on someone's art, unfortunately the person who shared it with me didn't know who the original artist was, and reverse image searching gave me mainly Pinterest, which is cancer to navigate.

Mainly changing the furnishing, from the stock, pistol grip, handguard, selectors, etc. Only major change with the receiver itself is replacing the magazine release lever with a push-to-release button like that found on the M4.

Relating to my status update from earlier, yes, the famous Thompson M1A2 SMG is the gun I was having difficulty finding numbers for. Gun Jesus didn't even have the A2, so here's to hoping the M1A1 is similar enough.

I like this a lot, and you've made me curious what a modernized drum magazine would look like.

unfortunately the M1A1-A2 modifications simplified the receiver, removing the notches where the drum magazines would hook onto, since they couldn't use the main one. I am interested in modernizing the Typewriter, just it has to be derived from the original variant, not the military service variants

Beautiful! I still like the drum magazine and forward pistol grip. And, maybe a speakeasy and smuggled booze.

Nice Concept but Kriss Vector will probably kick his butt

There are plenty of modern SMGs that can beat it by simply being lighter. Thompson's main appeal is its fame; it's a WWI gun that was long outdated before it was actually introduced into US service during WWII.

Cool idea, although you ought to do an update for the M3A1 grease gun, which was actually used by US tank crews up until the first Gulf War. The Thompson was retired as it was expensive and the M3 (.45 ACP version) and M3A1 (9mm version) were found to be more accurate in addition to being cheaper to produce.

I mainly went with Thompson due to its fame rather than effectiveness. If I wanted a better SMG chambered at .45acp, I would have gone with a KRISS Vector or a UMP45

Same reason why I'd rather make a model of a modernized T-34 rather than just making a T-54/55

Looks like it could have been a precursor to the classic M16.

Ok, this looks interesting. The stock is a bit long, though. The Thompson has a long length of pull as-is, so it would be useful to shorten the stock a bit. Nice that it's inline.

Regarding the magazine release, you can actually remodel the original release to make it ambidextrous (right thumb operation right handed and left index finger operation left handed). This would be mechanically simpler.

The handguard looks like what the US military would adopt, but I'd do M-LOK on the sides and bottom to reduce forward weight. Speaking of weight, I'd use an Aluminum receiver, like some of the current Auto Ordnance guns.

The safety would probably be better off having a 45 deg throw. Safe going back-down, and fire being straight back. This makes safe->fire quick. Also mirror it on the right, with a different retention clip. The selector could very well be a push button select, like some "civilian" safeties or the Stg44 selector. I'd also mirror the slot for the charging handle to make it ambi.

As for the stock, it might be perspective, as the stock is the same length as the original wooden stock. Still, it does feel too long.

I was told the magazine release was a bit weird, but in retrospect, it would have been easier to keep it, and it would be an easy modification to make it ambidextrous. I have a (cheap) airsoft M4 and just really like the release button within reach of the trigger-finger, which is why I chose that.

Aluminum receiver, wasn't aware Thompsons were still being produced. Would lose the "heavy" part of the modernization title but if there's no issues with aluminum parts, sure.

Now, asides from the magazine release, I did say I wanted to modify the thompson itself as little as possible. Now the bit about the selectors is the part that's confusing me, but truth be told, if I knew what i was doing, instead of two separate selectors, I'd have just one like on the M4, that goes from safe->single->auto. I don't really want to change the charging handle tho

There is a reinvented Auto Ordnance that makes Thompson replicas in a few varieties, including Al.

It's easier to keep the original actuation points for safeties and selectors, and things like short throw levers or push button conversions are simple and you see them as accessories on the aftermarket (not Thomson though because of the relative rarity).

Might be a bit of perspective, as the new stock is as long as the old one, but I agree, it does look a little too long

Thanks! If you look through my gallery you'd see I do sometimes modernize some of my models, thought about giving a gun a new makeover (technically this isn't the first time, but i never got around to uploading the original before the model was corrupted)

I don't actually know too much about guns tho, is there a problem with the rails?

Well to begin with the Thompson is a heavy beast, 10 to 11 pounds empty so really dosen't need much extra weight added. The model you have selected uses only box magazines and has no muzzle break so it is more to the 10 pound side.  The Thompson also already had a very comfortable vertical front grip available beside the one you used and the rear sight is good for the distances it was intended to be used at.  I do like your idea of the red dot type sight, 2 eyes open and a good sight picture in low light a big plus.  I can't think off anything other than the red dot that would be helpful so full rails not really needed.

TheoComm In reply to 1Walker [2019-09-21 01:36:29 +0000 UTC]

well, in the very least it looks prettier with than without, I'd say. could just stick on rail covers for the off chance that someone wants to shove something onto it (was originally planning on shoving on more crap, but it already took an hour to model the red dot from scratch and I didn't want to do so for the laser and crap)

Someone earlier mentioned that modern Thompsons produced by Auto-Ordnance are made from aluminum, cutting weight down

Don't get me wrong, your work is good, I like seeing it, and you well could be right about the rails.  There are always people that will hang so much unneeded junk on a weapon making it nearly useless.  (I shudder at some of the AR platforms I have seen.)  I just think this one may have made it too easy to over complicate an already good close combat weapon.  Tacticool is often fun to look at but too much of it makes the base weapon worthless in the field.
