These are nice buttons and drawings. I like The Hobbit and LOTR, too. I was obsessed with them a few years ago.

Thanks! I used to be obsessed with it when I was younger (when the Jackson movies first came out), but I had a recent revival of interest when I watched the Hobbit. Now I'm reading the Silmarillion and I'm really getting into more of the lore.

That was when I got obsessed, too: when The Fellowship of the Ring movie came out. I saw the movie before reading the books, so I was confused. Watching The Hobbit (cartoon version) in 5th grade helped me know a little, but not enough. I then bought the books for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series. After reading The Hobbit and FOTR, I saw it again, and it was much clearer.

I then read through the rest of the series, then proceeded with The Silmarillion, which I had to read through twice to understand. Next I read Unfinished Tales, then the 4 books a 2nd time. I did start on The History of Middle-Earth series, but didn't get very far because I'm busy.

I first tried to read FOTR in middle school, but because there was just so much going on I got confused most of the time and just settled with watching the movies. I find reading the askmiddlearth tumblr and the lotr wiki to be great spark-notes for the books, so that when you actually sit down and read the books it's much easier to grasp what's happening.

I do want to finish reading the books, though.

The LOTR series was one of the suggestions for reading in middle school.   Some of the English classes at my school had to read The Hobbit in 7th grade.  I didn't want to touch either of them.  I think I if I had read FOTR back then, I would have been confused, too.  Back then, the internet didn't exist.  I think we had Cliff Notes, but I didn't know about them until high school.  Cliff Notes are something similar to Spark Notes.  I have read each book in the series twice.

I remember Cliff Notes!  Never used them, but I definitely remember them from my school libraries.

It's just hard for me to finish long books.  I tend to be a slow reader when it comes to Tolkien (I like taking in all the details and making sure I understand everything), so I have no idea when I'll ever be done reading them.

I used Cliff Notes quite a bit in high school.  At that time, I heard there were other "Notes" that were similar, but never saw them.  I don't recall seeing any of them in the school library, especially when my English teachers were against them.

I have a hard time with long books, too, especially when I have trouble sitting still.  That's why movies are hard for me.  As a child, I would try to avoid long books.  Tolkien is not easy to read or understand.  The writing style is not simple, and there are many names and terms that are not from the real world.  I read them during my grad school years, and I was slow, too.  The Silmarillion was one of the hardest.  I had to read it through twice, and during the 2nd time, I had make notes and refer to maps and family trees to help me keep track and understand.

Yeah, even now when I try to read the Silmarillion I have to take in all the words slowly, just so I can fully envision what Tolkien is writting about.  His language and prose are beautiful, but it isn't an easy read!

The Silmarillion is not easy at all.  Even as an adult, I had to read slowly.  I don't think it's meant to be read fast.  In a way, it could be like a textbook, but more interesting.  I printed out a map of Beleriand and combined all the Elven family trees together to help me keep track.  I also made a list of the Valors and their Valiers, and had to keep referring to the index or appendix.  I think the longest story in that book is "The Tale of Turin Turumbar."

I have the added benefit of prior research into the stories of the Silmarillion, so for me it's I understand the stories and a great deal of the characters, I just need to actually read them, haha.

I remember searching for Tolkien material online.  I think that was one of the things that led me to read The Silmarillion.
