Description
How to draw a head in profile (Lord Shadowblade style!) I hope you guys like this. I think the proportions are fine, maybe the relationship between the ear, bottom of the nose and lips (and chin may be a little off) but it'd just be more elongated which can be fixed easily. I've just found that drawing a circle first helps a lot to keep the facial profile stuff right. So there you go! (Ignore the random sketches, they have nothing to do with the drawing of the profile heads!)1. First, draw a circle and then cut it into quarters like shown above. The horizontal line is your eyebrow and top-of-the-ear line and the vertical line also seperates the ear from the rest of the face.
2. Draw the (whatever that's called, the part of the jaw that bends sharply and comes out towards the chin) and draw a straight line down from the front of the face.
3. Draw an ear. This will help you with the other lines. Make sure it's big. Or else everything else will have to be small. At the bottom of the ear, draw a horizontal line to the front of the face. The will be your nose line. Now, see that space between the lines? That's how long your nose is! That's why the ear needs to be big.
4. Draw the nose first (then you'll know how much space to put between that and the eye) then draw your eyebrows and eyes. On the horizontal line coming from the jaw, draw your lip line then draw the lines of the lips.
5. Draw the hair lines (unless of course the person you are drawing is bald
6. (This is the best part!) Shade and add all the rest of the details that you like! Yeah! We're done!
I hope that wasn't too boring.
Hey! Idea! I challenge the people who see this to try this out and then send me a link so I can see it too! Whoop!

This was an amazing amount of help. All of my profile drawings have been awful awful awful, but the one I just did can probably pass as average :')

this is a really helpful tutorial I think that drawing the profile is the hardest angle for a portrait.
so thank you for the hints!

I start with the nose and then I go down and make the mouth and chin and ears, then I finish the top of the head. But this helps.

I usually don't start this way either, but I think it's helpful to just have an idea of the proportions.

Oh wow, this has helped me a GREAT deal. I've written the steps in my sketchbook so I can always have them handy.
I would consider myself an okay artist, but I just need a little help with anatomy. Usually I end up drawing face with little to no preparation, skeletons or outlines. This is so easy to follow though, no trouble at all!

Thanks! Wow, I'm glad you've found ti so helpful! That's what I made it for after all.
This is probably in need of a clean-up/re-vamp but the lines and proportions still hold.

There's my little attempt at it. :'D
It makes me want to start drawing again. I really forget how fun it used to be.
By the way, would you happen to know where I can practice drawing bodies as well? I have such a horrible time with the torso and legs.

Looks great! Hahah, drawing is way too much fun. I haven' drawn much in a while either (well, more that I haven't done a pencil drawing in a while, I've been doing more watercolor lately).
Hmmm...anatomy...well, let's see. I'm sure there are some great online tutorials if you search anatomy if you just want proportions and such. There are also a few great linsk on dA here as well, let me go gather them up for you.
Here's one giant resource: [link]
This one is a pretty good one too for general anatomy: [link]
I like this one for poses: [link]
That should help get you started. If you need anything else I'd be happy to oblige. I migh make my own human anatomy tutorial too so if there is anything in particular you find yourself in need of don't hesitate to ask or request it.

Thx so much, dude. I really needed for the comic I'm attempting to draw (I'll credit you). Heh, funny story I didn't realize you explained it in steps until I finished. I just tried my best to copy the pictures and place the features where the light lines were. Again, thx so much man. This will be my reference from now on.

You are very welcome! ^^
Hey, I'm a visual person too. Honestly, I don't follow directions very well unless they're in pictures. Whatever helps you.
Is this the picture you wanted Critiques for: [link]
Let me see....well, one little thing I would say. For lips, (men's, mostly) you typically don't want to shade them. The darker they are, the more feminie they look. It's better to draw two lines, one for the mouth and one beneath it for the shadow between the bottom lip and the chin. It'll make your men look more masculine. On the side view, you have his chin jutting out too much.
For your frontal view of the face, you want the lines that indicate the nose to come from the eyebrows, not the eyes. The nose bone is connected to (or very close to) the brow ridge on the skull, so for shading you want to show that. Also, you have a lot of space between the bottom of the nose and your lips. Give him more chin by moving the mouth up closer to the nose. You can look in th mirror to give you an idea of how much to move it up.

I did this so long ago, perhaps I should update it a little more. Though i think the proportions still hold fairly well.
