Shane Burns is one of a few vault dwellers of Vault 119 that lives in what is left of Pennsylvania. His vault was selected to house seeds in which would be used to restore vegetation to the world if something happened (which did). When Shane was born, his vault and surrounding area, was growing trees and a good bit of plant life but were time again under attack by bandits and slavers. When he was old enough to go out on his own, he did so and became a courier once he left the vault. By the age of 22 he met up with the Reilly's Rangers and was able to help them out a few time which allowed them to make him part of their crew. During his time travelling and wandering, he ended up going to Point Lookout where he met a few Tribals that allowed him to take part of their tests which lead to him gaining a scar on his head.

After realizing what happened to him there, he made haste and left Point Lookout, telling himself he would go back once he was recovered and no long a bit edgy with the Tribals, he did take a few Pungas with him in the process.

Traveling the Easter Coast and the wastes, he was able to aid the Brotherhood of Steel and met Three Dog, still part of being a courier, he was able to give Three Dog messages and new information from his jobs and travelling in which Three Dog became thankful for, in the Good Fight.

This is when Shane ran into the woman that married his heart, Heather. She was traveling the wastes on her own thing, gaining caps and taking names, when they ran into each other she was in a tight spot with a Deathclaw who had her stuck on a ledge but wouldn't leave. Working together they got it killed and became friends before marrying each other.

When Heather became pregnant with Shane's daughter, they were heading to Oasis on the month Heather was due to give birth. On the day of Jade's birth, they were not far from Oasis when they ran into a group of stray Super Mutants. Heather gave birth on the battlefield and Shane was wounded badly protecting her. Heather, before she was taken away, hide the newborn between the rocks she was hiding behind and Shane was with his newborn daughter Jade, were left to die. But fate had its hand in play when an Oasis villager, who was curious to know what was going on, found them.
