He blinked slowly, watching the trembling man before him. He was hesitating.
Why was he hesitating?! He had never hesitated to kill before…not that…not that he could…
Remember.
There was something different.
The man before him…he was sobbing and shaking, not unlike the rest of his victims. But, he wasn't just sobbing for his life.
No.
He was begging the almighty Scarecrow to remember something.
Anything.
What?
"Jon…Jon…"
Why was he calling him that? No one had ever called him that.
Had they?
He was Scarecrow.
Only Scarecrow.
Wasn't he?
The man was reaching…reaching up now…but not to try to claw or hit him.

He was…he was…
Stroking his face.
What in the….
"Jon, please. I know you still know. Deep down. You can remember. I know you can. You remember me. The way we were always together. Before the Corps; before the ring.
It was me and you. We were never apart. We took care of each other. Do you remember the times you would wake up with nightmares and I would hold you? Soothe you back to sleep? Do you remember the songs I used to sing? The lullabies…you seemed to like them. I know you remember. Please, Jon, try. Try for me…"
For a moment, he wavered.
Then, he steeled himself.
'For him'? He owed this trembling coward nothing.
Moving his arm back, he readied his scythe to slice through the smaller man's slender neck.
And then he stopped.
"Hushlittlebaby…d…don'tsayaword…."
What was he…
"Papa'sgonna…buy youa….mocking…bird…."
He was seriously…
"And…if that…mockingbird don't sing…."
W…what…was…happening…he…he felt like his mind was being…opened…a distant memory, like a faraway room down a long corridor, was swimming into his mind's eye…
"Papa's gonna…buy you a…diamond ring…"
The room was getting…closer…the memory clearer…he…he…
"And if that diamond ring…turns brass…."
The scythe clattered to the floor, its owner's face a mixture of confusion, pain, and the slow dawn of understanding.
"Papa's gonna buy you a looking glass…"
The smaller man got no further.
As if of their own accord, the fearsome Scarecrow threw his arms around him, pulling him close as tears that he had thought would be forever dried up flowed down his cheeks.
"E…E….E…d…die…." he whispered, the name sounding natural, even after so long unspoken.
Jonathan Crane was back.

lol well Jonathan was once in the black lantern corps. he was a yellow lantern, the fear one. but once he was in the corps, they took all of his emotion/memories. somewhere along the line, he lost the ring (i think lex luthor stole it) and he regained his memories/emotions later.
