Delaroxxa (the redheaded demoness featured here who calls herself my friend) was beaming with a confident grin when she arrived.

  “Hey, Dan! You know, you totally made the right decision asking me to pose for another render. I mean, I get that a pretty and voluptuous succubus like Lexi might be more popular with the unrefined masses. But when her fifteen minutes are up, your more sophisticated watchers will still be thirsty for a hot and super-classy demon-chick like Roxy. Heh, ‘voluptuous succubus’ sounds funny though, say that five times fast. Voluptuous succubus, voluccubus sucshubus, volucshubus . . .”

  Delaroxxa trailed off when she noticed the voluptuous succubus in question, Karulexxa, smiling at her from the couch. Although if you didn’t know how sweet Karulexxa is, like I do, you might have mistaken her smile for a triumphant smirk.

  “Aww, you think I’m pretty, Delaroxxa? That’s awfully—”

  “Oh, shut it!” Delaroxxa closed her eyes and started talking to herself. “Okay, Roxy, don’t overreact, Dan is a smart guy. Mostly. Well, he used to be, anyway. So I’m sure there’s, like, a totally reasonable explanation for why this—Nope, can’t do it.” She pulled me aside, and her glowing eyes were burning brighter than ever. “What the hell is she doing here?”

  “Don’t worry, Roxy, it’s fine, she’s just—”

  “You performed the incantation I taught you to stop her from coming back, right? With the candles and everything?”

“Yes, of course.”

  “Okay, cool. Sooo . . . what the hell is she doing here?!”

  “Well, she knocked on the door to apologize for tricking me last time. So I invited her in to sit down and talk about it. But don’t worry, she can’t mesmerize me anymore because I know she’s a demon—”

Delaroxxa looked up at the ceiling in exasperation. “It totally doesn’t work like that.”

  “—and so far she’s been on her best behavior. So, even though I’ve already done separate renders of both of you, I was thinking—”

  “I doubt it.”

  “—that it would be a shame to pass up this kind of opportunity. After all, how many humans ever get a chance to ask two, um, lovely and charming demonesses to pose together for him?”

  “O-M-G, Dan. O . . . M . . . G. Look, I can appreciate cheap flattery as much as the next egomaniac. But if you think that’s enough to, like, ever get me to pose together with that bargain-bin demon-sl—”

  “Roxy, I’m surprised. Are you really so insecure that you think Lexi might outshine you if you’re in the same render?”

  Delaroxxa shook her head with amused disappointment. “Oh, Dan, Dan, Dan, is that, like, seriously the best you can do? I mean, did you actually think that kind of amateur-hour persuasion would work on a master manipulator like me?”

  “Well, actually, it was Lexi who said you would chicken out just to avoid being compared with her.”

  Delaroxxa’s eyes narrowed, and she growled, “When do we start?”

  Of course, it went about as well as you’d expect.

  “Delaroxxa, you’re leaning your hand a little hard on me. What are you . . . Stop it, you’re . . . Hey! Dan, she’s pushing me!”

  Delaroxxa rolled her eyes. “Snitch. I’m not even doing anything.” And then she pushed Karulexxa again.

  “Roxy, come on, I can see what you’re doing. Can you please—”

  “You’re taking her side, Dan? Over your friend? I literally saved your life!”

  I rubbed my temples. “No you didn’t. And I’m not taking sides, Roxy. But I can’t do a mock-up of these poses if—”

  “Yes, Delaroxxa, I’m mortified that a demon of your rank and station would demean herself by acting like a petulant child. I can’t imagine why Dan hasn’t learned the incantation to expel you yet. It must be some combination of Stockholm syndrome and pity.”

  “Lexi, you’re really not helping. Look, you two don’t have to fight over me—”

  Karulexxa looked at me with a withering combination of condescension and confusion. “Um, I don’t mean to be rude, Dan, but that was a weird thing to say. What makes you think we’re fighting over you?”

  Delaroxxa shot me a wicked smile. She knew what I meant, but she smelled blood in the water and wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity like this to taunt me. And make me regret inviting Karulexxa back here in the first place.
   “Yeah, really, Dan, that was, like, so weird. Like we’d actually compete for the attention of a mortal? She’s just testing my authority and I’m, like, asserting my dominance. You know, typical demon power dynamics, and whatever. But leave it to a man to think everything revolves around him. You don’t know him as well as I do, Lexi, but Dan can be, like, really self-centered sometimes.”
  “You’re calling me self-centered?”

  Karulexxa piled on. “Hmm, I can see what you mean, Delaroxxa. And to be honest, that makes me a bit suspicious of why Dan has been so friendly and understanding around us so far. After all, we both know what human males are really like. They only pretend to be nice when they want something in return, especially from a female. There must be a selfish and twisted ulterior motive behind his kindness that he hasn’t revealed yet.”

  I sputtered. “I have ulterior motives?! You’re a succubus who preys on men by pretending to be human, for goodness—”

  Delaroxxa talked over me. “You may be right, Lexi. Of course, he’s been totally obsessed with me since the day we met, but maybe now he’s even, like, becoming obsessed with you, too. Especially now that he knows you’re a demon. He wants everyone to think he’s, like, sooo prim and proper, but I’ll bet that’s just so nobody finds out he’s really into bad girls like us.”

  “Have you lost your mind, Roxy? I’m not even the least bit—”

  Delaroxxa continued. “And although you might not be the ethereal-supermodel-goddess-type like me, Lexi, I have to admit, exaggerated curves like yours are totally ‘in’ with humans right now.”

  “That’s true, lately it’s been even easier for me to lead males like this one around by the nose . . .”

  On and on (and on) they went, finding common ground in their narcissism and their enjoyment of teasing me. And although their mockery was unpleasant, having a mutual target induced them to put aside their differences just long enough to model for my render, at least.

  I sincerely hope you enjoy the results more than I enjoyed the process.
