Description

I was inspired by the beautifully creepy fairies of DarkRealmsMaiden to create one myself, and put my own spin on the concept. Of course, this is a pale imitation of the art to which it pays homage, but it was a fun concept to play with.

I have written a vignette to go with it, and it’s quite silly, but it amuses me. And I’m all about self-indulgence in my fiction-writing.

In the many years that have passed since the elves of the Forest Realm revealed their existence, some of the more curious and adventurous inhabitants of the other hidden realms have also visited our world. Even the mysterious dark fairies have been known to make an appearance from time to time. While some humans find their strange, dark eyes and cold, indifferent demeanor to be off-putting and creepy, others believe it only makes them more alluring.

  So it came to pass that, one day, a rather surprising newcomer was spotted in a local bar. And one of the more confident regulars decided to take his chances and approach the beautiful dark fairy in their midst, beer in hand.

  “Hey, how’s it going? I haven’t seen you here before. I’m Josh. What’s your name?” He knew it was a lame thing to say to such a magnificent creature, who has probably never even been to the human realm before, let alone this stupid bar. But he thought she might appreciate being treated like an average person.

If she appreciated it, she didn’t show it. The fairy took the last sip of her wine, and continued looking at her phone as if she didn’t hear him.

He pressed on. “Can I buy you a drink? What kind of wine were you having?”

  With a soft, even-toned contralto, the fairy said, “No, you may not.” Other than speaking, she offered no visible acknowledgment of the man standing next to her. But when that didn’t prove sufficient to end the interaction, she sighed. “Wolfsbane, of the Mountain Pass. That’s my name, not what I was drinking.”

  “That’s a . . . pretty name.”

  “No it isn’t.”

  He coughed out a nervous laugh. “You certainly are, um, direct. That’s cool.” He started to lean closer to see her phone, “So, uh, what’re you reading on—”

  The fairy raised her hand and an orange and red orb appeared from her palm, surrounded in the air by magical symbols. “This is a fire ward. Not to be too direct, but if you come any closer to me, you’ll burst into flames.”

  “Oh, uh, okay, I can hang back here, then, I guess. No problem. I was just going to ask what you were looking at. I hope this isn’t, like, a stereotype, but I didn’t even know fairies use phones?”

  “We don’t. Is this strange little box a phone? I found it lying here and picked it up. I don’t even know how to turn it on.”

  Josh looked confused. “Then, why have you been staring at it the whole time I’ve been . . . oh.”

  She mimicked his exact intonation. “Oh.”

  “Well, um, have a good night, then.” He sighed, knowing that further persistence might be crossing the line. He wasn’t the kind of guy who would harass a woman, let alone cause an inter-realm incident. He didn't particularly like the idea of bursting into flames, either. But he found her aloof attitude to be strangely charming, and he noticed that she never actually asked him to leave her alone. So he couldn’t help himself. “Look, I won’t bother you anymore, Wolfsbane of the Mountain Pass. But, maybe . . . I’ll see you around here some other time, and we can talk a little more then?”

Wolfsbane closed her hand and the ward disappeared, but she continued to stare at the blank screen as he waited in vain for a response. When she feigned taking a long sip from her empty glass, he finally gave up. But as he turned to walk away, she said, just loud enough for him to hear, “Maybe you will.”
