Hi! Β I use photoshop CS4, and a Wacom tablet. Β I use photoshop mostly because I use it for a lot of photography--i didn't start "painting" with it until much later. Β I've also tried the trial version of Painter X3, but I didn't get it for financial reasons. Β If I were starting over, and focusing on painting instead of photography, I think I'd probably get Painter instead of photoshop. Β If I were you, I'd look up a lot of youtube videos on how to use the various programs and how to do various techniques, and study these BEFORE you download the trial version. Β i'd also try one program until the trial runs out, then try the other program's trial. Β That will give you the most time to figure out which program suits you best, because time seems to fly once you actually get the trial and are working against the clock.
