Description

Imagine a world before mankind, or any ape for that matter. Imagine a world before placental mammals, grass, snakes, ants, or even birds. This world did at one point exist but what if it wasn’t quite how the fossil record remembers? Could there be ancient mysteries that were never meant for the eyes of man? If that world did exist perhaps somewhere out in the immensity of the universe it could have looked something like Triasslya.

Our modern world despite its lack of megafauna compared to most eras is still no stranger to giants of the waves. Our world is home to dolphins, Orcas, Bayleen whales, and even freshwater giants like crocodiles and alligators. So perhaps the Nothagon of Triasslya isn't as strange to us as many other animals of this world, or perhaps not.

The Nothagon as the name might suggest is a large Nothosaurus species that unlike its cousins has diversified into freshwater and learned to master them. The reason so few others of its species have done this is because the freshwater biomes of Triasslya are mostly occupied with all niches accounted for that can easily be filled. Phytosaurs, Aetosaurs, temnospondyl amphibians, large Rhynchocephalians, and many other animals fill multiple stages in the food chain of swamps, creeks, marshes, and any other freshwater habitat. But the Nothagon has gotten around this by homing in on one trait no other freshwater competitor has mastered: migration.

The Nothagon is a large animal, weighing as much as a smaller orca, this is because they travel great stretches of freshwater following the nearest monsoons or other strong wet weather patterns that will yield high rates of fish. Because of this lifestyle they are highly nomadic and are deeply in touch with the weather patterns of Triasslya knowing exactly where to travel for the best hunting spots thanks to experience and years of genetic memory guiding them.

Because of their lifestyle the Nothagon is something of a herald for Archenkin. To see a small pod of them means for a decent wet season to be around the corner, however, to see a quite large grouping of these leviathans might indicate a larger more dangerous storm incoming. Archenkin both fear and relish the Nothagon's presence and have varying degrees of one or the other emotion towards them culturally, the Vanlitro being the ones infamous for praising these creatures.

Nothagon are very social, especially for a reptile. They stay in tight knit family pods that pass down generational knowledge to the young on how to hunt and survive. Groups can contain many males that may even be unrelated due to the fact that the Nothagon only mate every 5 years in the homeland island chains of the Vanlitro. This helps avoid incest and allows them to congregate in relative safety at this time. After the mating season ends the pregnant females and their families will head to an unknown nesting ground with the mountains to raise their young for a few months before returning to the waters.

Nothagon are surprisingly capable on land for their size, this is possibly what has kept them from getting any larger. It seems this is because despite how many water systems can interconnect during certain wet seasons there is always a chance the body of water you reside in will be cut off and dry up when the wet season ends. If you're unable to move back to water after this you will surely die, thus providing an incentive to remain somewhat capable on land. This means that many land predators take note of these giants and if hungry enough will try their luck with the beasts when vulnerable on land. This is a bad idea however since the Nothagon while being suited for eating fish has a very dangerous bite that they're more than willing to share with others.

The Nothagon is a mysterious addition to Triasslya, there is still so much unknown about these somewhat gentle creek guardians and yet that hasn't stopped the scientists of the world from trying to unearth more about their history and current place in the world. There are many other Nothosaur relatives to cover but no larger freshwater species have yet to arise past the Nothagon.
