Description Older pic I hadn't gotten around to uploading. I really need to get back to this series. I think this is one of the better ones. Also... well... I guess that's it. Take a look, breathe it in, and comment.

When we first started talking I believe it was the first pieces in your "Face" series. And, I have to say that this pice is now my favorite out of all of them. Even though this piece is hand drawn... it looks like it could be a photograph of a sculpture. You did an excellent job adding the highlights in just the right spots and the contrasting shadows give it that instant 3 dimensional quality. I love the fact that you did this piece on colored paper. If I'm not mistaken it's a royal blue paper right? I believe the blue of the mouth is the actual paper color. Let me know if I'm wrong because I see it in the underlying tones of the eyes and the skin. I think blue was a good choice of color since there is so much of it present in our natural skin tones. By making that choice it prevented you from having to have it lay on the surface of the skin when you added it later which usually takes way from the skin tone. The only thing I would add to this piece is a dark shadow along the left side of the inside of the mouth. Because this piece is so 3 dimensional feeling I almost feel like not having that one dark area in the mouth makes that area feel flat. By adding that I think it will make the piece "pop' even more.

Wow, you're the second artist in a day to critique this piece. I really appreciate it.

Also I totally agree about the mouth, though I hadn't even thought about it.

It's a simple addition to the piece. And, it will only make it stronger! This piece is very powerful and I'm glad you got a lot of good pay back!

From my first glance at this piece, I thought to myself wow what a cool wooden carving. Brendan, this work is outstanding and deserves a lot more attention than it has thus far. However, this is a critique so enough with the praise, lol. The technique I feel is the real wow factor of this composition. The way you created glossy highlights to create a varnished wooden effect is superb, as well as the shading that creates that carved wood look. This composition is very unique and all yours. However, there is one tiny little thing I would like to point out to you. When drawing or painting eyes and the mouth the outer lid or lip needs to be shaded darker. Take the big eye for example that really stands out, the sides beginning with the upper left, which would be what I am viewing as my left should be colored darker to compliment the light source, which is fluent throughout the piece. The mouth and other eye should follow that same execution. The rest of the face folds I wouldn't change a thing. It is part of what gives it that cool carved wood look. For whatever my words are worth, I truly think this is a great work of art.
Best,
Dave Gold

Really fantastic drawing! I love the points of light (acrylic?) that give the strange creature a plastic consistency.

Thank you, friend. The highlights are actually made with a dab of gouache. It's a secret an art teacher told me. Really does make it "pop".

That is quite cool! You have a very weird shiny-sausage thing going on there I didn't think it was traditional media at first, well done!

Shiny-sausage. Maybe that will be a theme I pursue in an upcoming piece.

I won't lie, this creeps the hell out of me. BUT, that's not a bad thing...at all. The use of fleshy tones in areas that resemble nothing of the human body probably makes this the most disturbing (again, not a bad thing.) The expression looks as if he/she is in shock or anguish. This could also add to this quality I think it has. And the colour combinations are quite unconventional. It's nice to see someone experiment with that. Anyway, I'm not very good at critquing art and all that so hopefully you'll appreciate my lame attempt. Oh, and keep up the nice work!!!

It's more than appreciated. I'm glad for any feedback, especially when it's about your personal response to the piece. Good to hear "Face VI" has the ability to disturb. Gotta admit, though, that wasn't what I was going for.

It's no problem at all. Just remember that it can still be a great/beautiful/awesome piece if it's still disturbing!
