Nevertheless, the "shame" is a concept I dislike. One must not be ashamed of being like God made him (when you believe in GOd), and one should not hide what he (or she in that case) is to avoid the sin of others (which is basically the ground for the veil... don't tempt men... as if they were pigs unable to contain themselves ?). Physical freedom is a pleasant thing, and I always suffer for them when I see women caught into veils and long skirts and trousers and and and... doing heavy work.
Well... they are a lot of things I do appreciate and admire in Islam. Not the veil, and specially not the way it is now progressing (much stricter than a century before), and not the fact that a man is worth two women, according to the Koran. In many countries apllying the sharia, this is still part of the law...

well i have to be honest...I dont have many friends who are required to constantly wear a veil..so i would not be able to comment..
but i realise what you are saying..i grew up in a staunch catholic home that was filled with rites, rituals, and iconisms. and started to rebel at an early age because of it...and yet...in hindsight ..i do believe my upbringing had a major influence in the way i am now

I also had, at least partially, this kind of upbringing. But it was possible to revolt... I think this made me quite convinced of the good of secular state. Anyone can believe what he wants, but that's his own problem, and in no way the concern of his neighbour. I also encoutered jewish strict observance, and now, even if Morocco is somehow quite tolerant, I see what it means to live in a religiously governed state... I don't know for other religions, I just have the feeling there is something special in following a single God... like sole children, who are supposed to be less sociable than ones with brothers and sisters.
