Over and above the tones and shadows of the photo i have to agree with a few other people and say that it seems to me you captured her, well, soul.
I am sure anything i might say here will echo either you or someone else's opinions of the image so i will try and refrain from mentioning too much.
I will just say that her arm held against her head like that (teamed with the armband) makes her seem (to me at least) like a young member of the The Supremes...but then the look in her eyes tells me something completely and saddeningly different.

The way she holds her shoulder and hand in comparison with the face.. her face already looks very young, and her hand/arms somewhat older, but that pose in itself seems to contrast them even more. Some people certainly fall far too easily into the timeless category, yet curious contrasts like this can also tag along.

I am really enjoying your critique of my work...
its challenging to eventually have to explain the significance of my work...especially after answering all the "oohs and aahs"
the photo had signicant relevance to the day that i had spent on the congo river. it was at the end of the day that we decided to visit a local pub and have a few cold local beers...it was our downtime after a hectic day..and whilst we were just sitting there...being all thoughtful and contemplative of the impact the day would have in our lives, a feeling of serenity descended over the group..and this girl was watching us over the wall.....
and she had the same soulful expression on her face...that we as a group felt...although her reasons might be different...i wondered if the way she looked at us was in relation to our current soulful mood
