The Bonnacon or sometime attributed to the Bonasus are some names given to a supposed bison like animal first described in the first century AD in the Naturalis Historia which was written by the Greco-Roman scholar Pliny the Elder.
In the Naturalis Historia the bonnacon is described to be near identical to a Bison except noted to posses a mane like horses but they are still equipped with back pointed horns just like a cow or bison.
The other detail reported in Pliny’s section of Naturalis Historia about Bonnacons that differs from your average bison is that the Bonnacon defends its self by fleeing in a straight path away from danger meanwhile defecating for as long as 600ms which when if pursued the pursuers will be scorched like their in contact with a flame when getting near the Bonnacon’s feces.
There has been no mention of a animal that matches the description given by Pliny since his era of human history.

My take on Bonnacons is less of a bovine or at least not a cow or bison instead my Bonnacon is a type of large antelope. My Bonnacon does share most of the described traits given in the real world description.
My Bonnacons are sexaully-dimorphic with bucks being close to the same size as the does. Bucks are about 26%-32% greater in weight than their female counterparts. In addition to being slightly bigger than females the horns/antlers are not only more than twice as long they are significantly more straight with male horns pointing out from the base of the skull virtually straight with the tips sharply turning back on them selves.
Male or female,all Bonnacons share most traits. Bonnacon are mostly your average antelope but their most unique feature has to be their ability to spray corrosive napalm like feces from a special anal chamber which they use to deter pursuing attackers.
Thanks to it’s ability to deter any predators who try to hunt the Bonnacon they have adapted a more round and not so long head sense they no longer have to be on watch for predators.

With the Bonnacon I wanted to do something different to the bison style depiction seen in the most well known appearance which is Bonnacon’s use as an enemy in the game Final Fantasy XI.
If you saw my custom Fallout MTG cards I posted I don’t know how long until the next one. I’m all ways spinning many plates at one given time.But recently I felt quite productive.
The art was made early winter right around Christmas 2021 I think post Christmas eve.
