Description
Well, this cake was a learning experience. I tired some new things... some worked and others didn't. I had a basic idea in mind for the cake, and once I got started with it, I just went with whatever came to me.Overall I'm not satisfied with how this cake turned out. This is due to not having enough time and failed experiments.
I originally planned for this cake to include a dragon hanging out on the castle. I also wanted to put more detail into the castle itself such as crenalations and brick texture.
For the turrets I wrapped four pieces of cake in rolled fondant. This worked for the most part, but by the next day, as seen in the picture, they were getting a little 'saggy'. If I make this cake again they will need more interior support, or be incorporated into the main castle part somehow.
The figures I made for the cake came out half-way decent. The kids really liked them and ended up playing with them afterwards. (The birthday girl actually asked me how long the princess would last without being eaten because she wanted to keep it.
The bottom section of the cake was chocolate with a chocolate buttercream filling while the castle part of the cake was yellow with raspberry filling.

Having worked in a bakery for a few years ( and having to repair quite a few cakes) I can tell alot of work went into this, and the result is so cute ^^
I noticed the towers tilting/sagging, tho I think it almost adds to the fun/whimsy of the whole cake. It's obviously not meant to look like a real life castle, so who cares if the towers lean?? As long as it tastes good and makes the birthday girl happy, it has served its purpose.

Ugh... repairing cakes is a nasty job to do!! Thank you for your kind words! Yeah, a lot of people mentioned they rather liked the leaning towers... I guess I'm just a little miffed at them because they didn't want to listen to me! The birthday girl did really enjoy the cake, and you're right, that is all that matters!! (She'll have to look at it all the time now because I'm putting a picture of it in her scrapbook!! Haha!

luckily all I usually had to do was fix a person's name if the main decorator spelled it wrong, or fix corners that got smooshed/messed up while in transit to our store. Edible glitter is your friend for hiding/disguising small mistakes ;D
cake decorating and scrapbooking?? lots of crafts! ( I currently work at a craft store so once again, i know how complicated scrapping can be
)

Yay! Edible glitter! I just bought some of that but I haven't had the chance to use it yet!
I'm becoming obsessed with scrapbooking!! I started my friend doing it... my mom.... and now my niece... I keep telling people to take pictures so we can put them in the scrapbook... hehe...

I liked using the clear/transparent glitter the most-- it was very good for covering lil smudges or weird spots in the buttercream, and it made the frosting shimmer when the light would hit it. The thing I found funny was whenever I made up orders for the cakes I would ask the customer if they wanted the glitter, and most of them didn't even know edible glitter existed. They would ask "...Can we eat that??"

Haha! I still have people wonder if the edible images I put on cakes are safe to eat... um... yeah
I'm hoping to use my glitter really soon!! So exited...

Once, on Thanksgiving, someone gave me a cupcake that was all decked out to look like a turkey. It had little feathers and a beak and a waddle and everything. It had a giant tail, too. It was so awesome, I couldn't eat it.
