Description
Well, this cake was a learning experience. I tired some new things... some worked and others didn't. I had a basic idea in mind for the cake, and once I got started with it, I just went with whatever came to me.Overall I'm not satisfied with how this cake turned out. This is due to not having enough time and failed experiments.
I originally planned for this cake to include a dragon hanging out on the castle. I also wanted to put more detail into the castle itself such as crenalations and brick texture.
For the turrets I wrapped four pieces of cake in rolled fondant. This worked for the most part, but by the next day, as seen in the picture, they were getting a little 'saggy'. If I make this cake again they will need more interior support, or be incorporated into the main castle part somehow.
The figures I made for the cake came out half-way decent. The kids really liked them and ended up playing with them afterwards. (The birthday girl actually asked me how long the princess would last without being eaten because she wanted to keep it.
The bottom section of the cake was chocolate with a chocolate buttercream filling while the castle part of the cake was yellow with raspberry filling.

Marzipan... interesting thought! Thanks!
To fill a cake you just slice it in half horizontally and spread a filling of your choice on the bottom portion and then put the top part back on! viola!
Thanks a bunch for your nice comment!

Ah ha! I think I was thinking backwards. Though I never thought to put filling in a single-layer cake before

myow, i know everybody likes the saggy turrets but if you drive a wooden dowel through the center of the turret and into the cake below it should help keep it erect. another thing that would help would be to roll your fondant thinner, 'cause that stuff is heavy! very cute though, congrats on a DD!

Yeah, I'm sure a wooden dowel would do the trick!

That's so cute! If you haven't eaten the princess by now, you can spray her with varnish to preserve her indefinitely.

Using the fondant is a little more pricy than just using buttercream, but it was fun to use it!
