Description
In this picture we shall be concluding the coverage of the Enoploteuthoidea superfamily of Oegopsid squids with the family Pyroteuthidae better known as the Fire Squids. This smally family consisted of seven species divided into two genera. They are distinguished from the other families they are related to by a a permanent constriction and bend near the base of their tentacles. As a group they are also very common along the Hawaiian Islands with 17 percent of all specimens of the family collected there. Two species are well known enough to bear common names. The Round-Ear Enope Squid (Pterygioteuthis giardi) is a small squid measuring at most 1.33 inches in body length. It lives in the Atlantic waters especially around Hawaii at depths from 0 to 656 feet. Being short-lived to the maximum of 78 days it feeds on smaller fish and invertebrates like copepods and is in turn fed upon by large fish, dolphins, and the Guadalupe Fur Seal. It was named after French Zoologist and Marine Biologist Alfred Mathieu Giard who did a lot of research into parasitic copepods.
The Jewel Enope Squid (Pyroteuthis margaritifera) is another small species that dwells in the waters around Bermuda and the Mediterranean ad depths that range from 246.063 to 1640.42 feet in total depth.
