Description Chance Encounter

" Hired to bring back an escaped criminal, Harnepher tracks her bounty into the forest. Thanks to her excellent tracking ability and her keen nose, the mercenary minotaur is confident she will indeed collect that sweet, sweet bounty. After over an hour of pursuing her quarry deep into the forest, Harnepher subdues and restrains the thief. Just then, not too far off, she hears the solitary voice of a female, and detects the scent of sorcery in the air. As she clears the treeline to come face to face with the mysterious conjurer, a new scent fills the air more powerful than the first- the scent of blueberries..." 🐲

A redesign of my oc Harnepher. Gave her some gladiator armor, made her skin a bit darker, and changed her hair style.

Nice armor on her. As much as I like bikini armor, it is cool to see female characters with practical armor for protection

Thanks! I appreciate that you appreciate practical armor too. In Harnepher's case, I went specifically with a gladiator type design, with some barbarian aesthetics mixed in. I will be drawing a full-body picture so we can see the rest, plus her helmet.

Thank you! I definitely had a color scheme in mind. Something earthy was appropriate. So browns, reds, coppers, bronze, gold, silver, etc.

Do you have a favorite mythical creature?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

I'd say a dragon or a griffin. I'm also fairly fond of mermaids.Β
And what is yours?

Anything in particular about those creatures that you like?

I've always been partial to minotaurs since I was a kid. It started with various material about labyrinths, etc. The idea of a ferocious beast stalking around a maze was pretty cool. Since then, minotaurs have been adapted into all sorts of roles and archetypes. It's fun to see the different takes on them.

That is pretty interesting. It's always cool to see what others find interesting and why.

I myself am partial to liking dinosaurs, their size and different habits are pretty interesting to me, just add wings and you have a dragon. I just love the variety of different species of dragon that people can come up with. There are so many different shapes and sizes that dragons can come in, which just fascinates me.Β
Griffins, on the other hand, seem more majestic. As well as their baby versions can be beyond adorable and fluffy. I like fluffy things. But it's basically in complete contrast to dragons. Dragons have a fiery spirit, where griffins are portrayed as more regal and majestic. Keeping their cool under pressure.Β
Then mermaids. They can be portrayed as soft and mysterious, as well as fierce or magical. I'm not quite sure why mermaids interest me, but I love the idea of drawing floating hair. I guess the elegant curves that you can get when drawing and creating mermaids are interesting to portray. Their movements are elegant.Β

I guess the traits I like the most of these creatures are:
Dragons: Fierce and have variety.Β
Griffins: Regal and majestic and fluffy.
Mermaids: Elegant, and "floaty".Β

I get inspired by movement and pose.Β

Minotaurs are fascinating as well: I see them as strong creatures with strong wills; as well as fierce and steady.Β

I understand what you mean when you mention the traits. I think when choosing what creatures to draw that type of determination is going to be important; certain creatures capture a particular quality or mood.

Sorry for replying so late. :3

I agree with this.
What is your favorite mood to portray with which creature?
Or what mood does minotaurs give you?

No worries. I wasn't expecting a reply.

I think there's a difference between my creatures and the same creatures in general. I like the idea of putting in twists or things you may not expect from that creature or mixing it with something more familiar. With minotaurs for example, I think most people expect the stereotypical things, where the character acts the way they look, big, tough, etc. While that may be true, it can help to put gentle aspects to the personality or give them quirks so they're not just beyond the stereotypes, but relatable somehow even though they're not human.

As for a specific mood, the word focus or determination comes to mind. When they're in their zone and element, I think they're more dangerous and unpredictable.

What about you? How do you balance your creature designs?

I agree. I also love to mix in some unexpected characteristics to a character or creature.
Β (Inspired by your minotaur conversation.)
I do sometimes create pieces that are classical stereotypical, but I prefer giving characters or creatures a twist.
Or I would try and think of ideas that people don't necessarily associate with the creature. Like mix two topics together that are in complete contrast.Β For example history and future. Creature and machine. Mystery with obvious. Fantasy and real. Sea and sky ect. Or I just throw two creatures in a pot and come up with something new. I love drawing creatures. For example the deer fairy on my profile.

Yes, I agree. It's also fun to try and do things other people haven't done or things that are not popular. Who knows, when people take risks like they, it might end up becoming popular eventually; lots of trends started that way.
