Description
This is a commission work commissioned byFor those of you who may be too young to remember who this is, this is Irma Langinstein, from the late 80's/early 90's cartoon show Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. If you're old enough to remember, Irma is April O'Neil's best friend, and works at the Channel Six News station as the secretary to Burne Thompson (her and April's boss).
Originally wanted her in her traditional long dress, but I suggested it might be cuter if she wore more casual, girly clothing, and he agreed. I felt it would balance and compliment her otherwise geeky quality rather well. I suggested the shorts and he suggested the pink and white striped tank top. He was also specific on this pose, which remained the same from the beginning.
The concept of this picture is that Irma is posing for a photo that April is taking, which sort of explains Irma's pose, blushing, and the looking away from the camera.

She's so rare... last time I watched TMNT (the old series) it kinda sucked... I'm not the kid I used to be for liking this series. But it's a classic like none other... all characters are memorable, and she is one who sadly, didn't survive to anything but this series.

I want to say I remember her but I really don't. Used to watch TMNT religiously, too... I distinctly remember April's bright yellow coat, though ^_^;

It's ok if you don't remember her based on this drawing. I did draw her wearing clothes she never wore in the cartoon. It was always the dress and turtleneck sweater. So if you didn't remember that, you wouldn't remember based on this picture. The one thing that remains the same are her trademark glasses and her hair tied back like that. It was always like that in the cartoon, that and the glasses.

The original Ninja Turtles movie was the best of the three, and then years later came the CG one, which I never watched. James Saito as the Shredder (in the first movie) was awesome.

Yeah, pretty rare. Not much out there of her. I liken her to Maya Ibuki from Evangelion. She's not a popular character either and she's not too interesting. What I like about being able to draw these characters is that you can make them interesting, and put attention on them that they didn't get before.

How come nerdy characters drawn in anime style looks hot? Whereas cartoon styled nerdy characters looks...NERDY...

Because in anime theres a conscious decision on the part of the animators to make any female character feminine, whether they act that way or not. They always want for there to be the potential for a woman's sexuality to be unleashed, so they draw them with hot bodies, but modest personalities and attire.
In cartoons, at least back in the 80's, stereotypes were really common, so when they drew a nerdy character they drew what they thought was nerdy.

I think I realized now why anime become popular. Anime focuses on the face, the ahem...booty, the so-called attractiveness of a character while cartoons focuses on the form, the whole, the shape of a character.

And the reason I use the RO type priestess' as examples is because in anime, it's a taboo. Normally they'd be conservatively dressed and modest. But the creators realized sooner or later that it was a fetish in and of itself to draw innocent, pure girls with sexy bodies and revealing clothing, because it's a unique combination and it gets the attention of the male fans. Guys typically have a thing for innocent girls who look naughty.

Anime does alot of taboo things with characters, or at least things that used to be considered taboo. Like, for example, take Sister Prier. She's basically a nun/priestess type character but she has a sexy outfit. It's like that with RO clerics and such too. They take innocent characters and make them sexy in appearance.

I wouldn't say it's a coincidence. Prier might have very well been modeled after the RO priestesses. If Prier were just some cookie-cutter priestess with T&A, I wouldn't be interested, honestly. People would think a guy would like her for obvious reasons, but for me that honestly come secondary after her fiery personality and willingness to take a stand for what she believes in.
