Description This will be the cover for my graduation announcements. It's a very symbolic image: an ibis-headed sphinx holding a flame. The colors, red and purple, are also symbolic (unfortunately, the scan made all of the purple look like blue in this image). I tell people that it only has three legs to represent the three persons of the Trinity... but really the fourth leg was just too much of a pain and would have cramped the image which needs to shrunk down quite a bit to fit on the card.

The blueness is really bothering me... I might try to use a different scanner to see if the purple shows up better. x(

You guessed correctly. Though technically I did the lines in mechanical pencil and erased them as I colored over top. xP

Don't give up! I used to hate colored pencils soooo much because I was just terrible with them haha! It takes time to get good with them, but it's definitely worth it.

What an unusual variation of a Sphinx, but I like unusual.

Sphinxes in Egyptian mythology can also have the heads of various animals (criosphinx has the head of a ram and hieracosphinx has the head of a falcon), so I substituted the head for that of an ibis to represent the Egyptian god Thoth, the god of wisdom and writing. The overall idea was to create a creature that symbolized a guardian or keeper of knowledge: the sphinx element provided the guardian symbolism and the ibis represents the knowledge aspect. So it is weird, but quite thoroughly thought out to be fitting to display on the front of my graduation cards. Copied from another reply because I'm too lazy to type it all out again haha!
