Description
In spite of the darkness, snakes and spiders, Lyra Heartstrings didn’t feel fear. Nothing could hurt her in this holy place, she felt that deep in her heart. Even so, she stopped for several minutes and just stared at the ruined walls and sand. The sand poured from holes in the roof of this tunnel in fine streams, like from an hourglass, and she wondered for how many centuries, even millennia, the sands of time must have buried this place.
Did the humans create the ponies? Did they sail away to the cosmos on their magnificent ships, eternally protecting Equestria from the horrors beyond the stars? She would find none of those answers here, she realized. Markings on the walls indicated that this was some manner of underground rail station. But then why was she finding bones? They lied scattered about with no hints of organized burial. Why would so many humans gather in an underground transport station for their final moments?
As she cleared the sand away from one of the skulls, a brown spider crawled out of the eye socket. After so many years of faith and prayers, she finally had proof of the existence of humans: and this was it. Where once their proud cities stood tall against the world, there now stood Equestrian forests and beaches, and their bones slowly returned to the dust of the world.
Her breaking heart raged against the notion that this might be all that was left. It couldn’t be. Her gods still lived somewhere, and she would never stop trying to find them.
I first tried an archaeologist picture of Lyra Heartstrings in 2016, it was one of the first things I did after I first started trying digital art. It turned out terrible. I like how this new one turned out, though.
