Working with Plastic Canvas

:bademoticon: Getting Started ~ Working with Plastic Canvas:
:bademoticon: Step 1: Take stock of crafts supplies ~ Photo Details: Before starting on a new project see what is on hand and what needs to be purchased. When working with any type of plastic canvas that needs to be cut, trimmed or altered in any way, be sure to have a designated pair of scissors to do the job. The blades become dull when cutting the plastic, but once the scissors are used for cutting plastic canvas they can be used for years. The same goes for the seam ripper: Have a designated seam ripper to use to trim or cut small spaces.
Coaster sizes can be purchased in individual packs or you can cut your own, like the little 'house' on the left corner. The lined tablecloth (the blue, flowered material) was purchased to cut and use between two pieces of plastic canvas with the lining side in the up position to assist in the absorption of any condensation from a drinking glass. Round Plastic Canvas is available in a variety of sizes, which I have used for specific projects, but the two sizes represented in the photo are best for coasters (see "Other Coaster Examples" towards the bottom of the article).
7-Mesh Canvas can be purchased in colors as seen in the plastic canvas sheets in the top of the photo. I purchase plastic canvas in colors for projects where I want the color to show through as part of the pattern. For other projects where the yarn will cover the entirety of the canvas, translucent canvas can be purchased instead (the coaster bases are translucent), which is less expensive than the canvas available in the array of colors.
Projects Using Plastic Canvas ~ link is to a folder featuring a variety of Artisan Craft Deviations
A Few Examples of Using 7-Mesh Canvas:
Creating a Tissue Box:
:bademoticon: Step 2: Consider the color hue of the project. Choose coordinating colors. Special needles are available that have a wide eye for inserting the yarn. Having a needle threader on hand saves a lot of time when threading.
Prior to threading, feel a few inches along a piece of yarn in each direction. There is a smoother direction than the other. Insert the smoother section so it is sewn directly into the blocks, which decreases the chance of the yarn knotting while allowing the yarn to have less resistance when stitching.
After Choosing the color desired for the project, make sure you have your designated scissors (set aside to use only for cutting plastic canvas) and seam ripper, then count the squares to fit the pattern. This is 7-Mesh Canvas, which is 7-squares per inch, and is the most popular size* of plastic canvas.

*Plastic canvas comes in four (4) different sizes; five (5) -mesh (5-squares per inch), seven (7) -mesh (7-squares per inch), ten (10) -mesh (10-squares per inch) and fourteen (14) -mesh (14-squares per inch).
:bademoticon: Step 3: To cut the pattern for a tissue box count 32-squares for width and 36-squares for height**. This allows for varying sizes of tissue boxes available from different manufactures. Cut from each corner of the canvas in order to have a smooth bottom for each side, providing a cleaner look.
The 32 x 32-square Top: From the leftover canvas, cut two sections for the tissue box top. Each piece will be 32-squares wide and 16-squares deep and will be attached together with a single stitch to cover the edging once the center hole is cut out. Cut from the outside sections of the leftover canvas to leave two smooth edges, then make sure the outside edges are the smooth ones prior to cutting out the opening.

**Disclaimer: In this case, I actually cut 32 x 32 squares for the sides, since I was adding a ruffle at the bottom. The patterns provided are for a standard 32 x 36-square side and 32 x 32-square top to create a tissue box.
:bademoticon: Step 4: Cut an opening, which will allow room for the tissues to be pulled through. The opening can be adjusted as per preference, but this one is cut leaving six squares on each side, then cutting up three squares, over three squares then up three squares then trimming the width of the opening. Trim away any canvas not cleanly cut, which is where the seam ripper comes in handy.
Attach*** the two sections of the top of the tissue box together. When rounding a corner use three tight stitches to make sure there is full coverage.
When beginning to stitch the pattern, make sure the flatter area of the canvas is on the inside. The canvas has a protruding area on one side and a flatter area on the other, so it looks best (especially when the canvas shows through the work) when the flatter area is on the inside of the craft. Do the same for all sections.

***To start stitching hold down an end section of the yarn then stitch over it to hold the yarn in place. Finish the end of the yarn by pulling it underneath stitching for a secure hold. Do this whenever starting/stopping a section of yarn.
Videos that illustrate stitches for plastic canvas
:bademoticon: Step 5: Decide which color to use to put the framing around the top section. This frame pattern will be used on the sides as well. Each corner contains a five-square "star" to be filled in as full stitches across. Move around the "star" but leave the center two spots to fill in last. Follow the same pattern for each corner to get a consistent look. The framing in between the stars are straight stitches from square to square to cover the space.
Finish filling in the pattern according to the pattern provided. Once the top section is finished, set it aside and begin work on the sides of the tissue box.
:bademoticon: Step 6: Coordinate the framing pattern on the sides of the tissue box with the top section of the box, using the same color of yarn.
After the framing is completed on all four sides, start with the "flower" and the "leaves" designs. Each "leaf" is a five-block square starting one square up from the frame on each corner. The sides of each leaf are straight stitches, wider where they abut the "flower" design, while shorter towards the corner. The center "stem" is a stitch right over the top of where the stitches meet (see pattern). I just use one long string of green to complete the "leaves" and make sure the excess yarn is secured under the stitching of the "flower" design.
I like to use a variegated yarn for the "flower" to give the texture interest. I use a long string of yarn and insert the smoother direction into the needle, carefully moving the needle down the string of yarn, doubling the yarn into even strands. This is necessary to give the "flower" a puffy look, as there will be two sections of yarn in each square. Start the yarn by holding down the two ends and stitching over them to anchor the yarn. When pulling the yarn up then back down into the next square leave the yarn sticking up a bit. If pulled too tightly simply take the needle under the two strands and pull up. Alter the stitches for a better texture. The stitches can be angled right or left, up and down or side to side. This helps to fill the area, so no canvas shows through. Repeat the process for all four sides. See pattern for more details.
:bademoticon: Step 7: Making sure the smooth ends of the canvas sections are at the bottoms of the sides, use an angled slip stitch to attach the first side section of the tissue box to the top piece.
It is easier to attach a side to another side if two sides are attached to the top then those two sides are stitched together before adding the third side. Attach the third side with an angled stitch before adding the fourth and final side. Once the fourth side is attached, slip stitch all around the bottom to cover the exposed area.
The Finished Look of Cover Over a Box of Tissues: Difference Between Pattern and this Box ~ For this pattern I used a ruffle instead of an angled slip stitch to finish the bottom, since I wanted a fancier look. To allow space for the ruffle I used the same pattern provided but changed the sides to 32 x 32 squares.

The Patterns for the Top and the Sides of Tissue Box:
The top section of the tissue box is 32 x 32-squares. The pattern provided allows for some of the coloring of the canvas to show through, which is why I will spend extra cash to purchase canvas in varying colors versus transluscent canvas. What looks like little "arrows" are actually stitches that are going around a corner and meet in the same square. The pattern alters directions in the center graphics to add interest.
It isn't difficult to create your own pattern. Just get some graph paper or use digital graph paper**** as shown in this pattern and draw a pattern.

****The graph paper used in the pattern is a standard background graphic with the PhotoShop Elements 15 Program. And, yes, the graphic was created by PS to make it look like there was a "coffee stain" in the top, right corner. I have no idea why!

The sides of the pattern are all 32-squares wide with a height of 36-squares. As with the top pattern, this pattern was created to show sections of the coloring of the canvas.
Alternate Versions of Tissue Boxes:
This Tissue Box was created with Translucent Canvas:
Another type of box that can be created is one that can hold two rolls of bathroom tissue as shown here:
The Front The Back
Coasters:
The large square coaster was made by using a packaged set of squares. The smaller square coasters were cut out of a larger piece of plastic canvas, along with the "house" shape. The round coaster bases show one of the two smaller sizes available for purchase already cut and ready to use. Plastic Canvas is available is varying sizes and shapes, including bases for Christmas Ornaments.

I have a question about the house. How did you stitch up the angled sides? I'm trying to make a 3d character, but I have to design my own pattern for it, and there are a few angles that aren't 45 degrees. Instead of going one up and one over, it goes 3 up and one over. And I'm not sure if I can stitch that together.

It's more of how I cut the sides to fit that I'm having trouble with.

Hmmmmmmm. I've put together a "rounded" piece by holding the canvas in the rounded shape then sewing it to the end piece by using an overlapping stitch. It could be you may need to use a short stitch then a long stitch to attach the sides. Remember you can cover up gaps with extra yarn.

I see. I think I'll just have to practice with it. I'm basically trying to make a trapezoid.

Do you have a suggested yarn size for use with plastic canvas? I have some, but have never used it before.

I've used baby yarn and just doubled the thickness, then regular yarn as a single strand. The thing with Plastic Canvas is how easy it is to alter yarns and ways to use it!

Thank you so much! I was already a crafter when my sister requested a tissue box and told me about the plastic canvas. She only does macramé, so she asked me if I could create a box, which meant my very first project was one!!!

I've been using Plastic Canvas for decades, and at first cut out all my own pieces before discovering bases could be purchased. Certainly saves time!
