Three things were needed: patience, luck and an umbrella.
Take the camera, place it in a safe place, turn it into the direction of the storm, increase the shutter speed to 10 seconds or more (a short time delay before release is needed), push the relase, don't touch the camera until it has finished and hope that something great happens in this time. The bad thing about my cheap camera is: a 10 seconds take is followed by 30 seconds processing. I've missed a lot of great opportunities while my camera was processing.

How do you even know which direction a storm is in? 
Ah, so you have a 10-second window to catch the shot, but then half a minute where you can't do anything? That does sound tough D:
