Description My entry for Contest: Swim to Win! hosted by

Shaya and Lana, both 10 years old, are best friends.  For five years, Lana had trained Shaya to be a strong and fast swimmer and an excellent breath-holder.  As they both grew up, Lana was always there for Shaya, having her back when they went on underwater adventures, and as their friendship grew stronger, Lana became nearly attached to Shaya.  Lana loves Shaya as her best friend and although she would be happy with a romantic relationship, to show the extent of her love, she wants Shaya to be happy, which makes her even happier.

Here, Shaya and human Lana are submerged in the warm and beautiful ocean and Lana is immensely enjoying her time with Shaya.  Although she knows that Shaya is already in love with Magis , Lana wishes to at least let Shaya know about her own feelings.  And while in the water, both of them feel content and at peace.

Shaya and Magis may be in love, but Lana's love for Shaya further strengthens not only their intimate friendship, but also strengthens their friendship trio.

Excellent colouring, and I like the shading under the hair. The posing is also great, it works out perfectly. It's interesting that this is taking place underwater, I've never seen anything like that before. I also really love the added touch of the pink hair. The bubbles are drawn really neatly! Some piece of advice I have are, the lines are a little shaky, and using large, quick strokes will smooth them. Adding some shading on the hair, and more on the skin will help to show depth, and if possible, using lines of different thickness with show shape and form better.

Beautiful image, I like how you made the bubbles and their shape, it's really well made !

If they are underwater, I think the hair should have a different movement, more diffused, but I see you tried to do something like that.

The light should be different, more complex, as they're underwater, look at underwater pics to inspire you, also some strokes are a bit clumsy.
Talking about light, the drawing is missing shadows, there are some but in general the colors aren't varied enough.

But I sincerely find this beautiful, and even more with the little story in the description !

The vision is strong and present but the originality is a bit lacking simply because I assume that this is fan art. However the underwater theme isn't seen very often and I believe that this wasn't made from a template or copied from another artist, so great job! In the technique the shading is looking good under the right girl's chin, however it is lacking in the shadow that should be on the right girl's chest and face, and the left girl's hair. The environment could use a bit more work, too. I adore the attention to all of the bubbles, though. The only thing that really sticks out as a major problem, is that the right, blue strap on the right girl is missing. I'm quite sure that many people who know these characters will receive a warm welcome by the members of their fandom, and will probably go on to influence many artists. c:

I assume this is the same mistake regarding my characters?  I forgive you, so this is a fair critique.  But what do you mean by blue strap missing?  I designed her swimsuit that way.

yeah that was the other one where i was mistaken about the fan art  im sorry fren, but about the strap on the bathing suit, she only has one strap, and it seems as though the other one is just missing. My mistake if that had been your intention, it just gave me the impression that you had forgotten the other strap

TheThunder-Art In reply to TheFandomPony [2016-08-27 23:51:10 +0000 UTC]

Ah, but I double-checked.  I didn't forget the strap on the left.  The pink-haired girl, Lana, has her right arm raised, obscuring the second strap.  If you look carefully, the blue swimsuit curves just before it is obscured.  I didn't forget.  I just ended up covering it up.  But thanks for pointing this out.  It's good to receive feedback like this.  And I take no offense to them being mistaken as existing characters, but I have to admit, I never thought it was possible.  If you know anything, can you point me out to some source I might have overlooked?  You know, sometime?

i just ignorantly assumed that it was from an anime of some sort, because there are so many that i don't know, i truly apologize for that ^~^

There's probably a lot of anime that I don't know about either.  Sometimes we take chances, maybe even risks, when we come up with OCs.

Pro: This has to be the best art in your gallery! I really like the fact that you kept the face to anime look, yet make it unique to make your own style. The eyes looks very basic in a good way. It shows that you know the basics in Anime or Manga. But the best part about this drawing is your hands. They look very realistic yet has that anime feel to it. I like that you took the extra step by adding nail polish, which does compliment their bathing suits really well. This makes the piece look very good.

Con: Some of the lines are little bit shaky like on the girl on the right where the hair just curves in a unnatural way. This also counts on the girl to the left, but it's not as big has the other girl. Also, the bubbles in the pic distract the picture and kind of makes the pic look awkward a little bit. It also seems like you used a mouse to do this pic, which isn't a good ides since some of the lines look a little bit messy. So, use a tablet next time. It also doesn't look every emotional, at least I don't feel anything in this pic other than romance. So, try to give your future artworks more emotion.

To start with the negatives there are a few shaky lines, but that doesn't effect the overall image by very much, adding more shading and a little extra detail would improve it greatly and adding a bit more of a background to set the seen better would also improve it, though I've seen a lot of other work out there like this, it still makes a great starting point to improve your skills and try new techniques. The positives are the characters are well placed, the anatomy is superb, the colours clash very well together and aren't too blocky and dull, making it easy to look at, and the light shining on the water to give it that glinting effect was excellently represented.

Very well done! It's a beautiful scenario for such great friends.

I do admit there are some good points mentioned in the critiques, but it still turned out amazing in my opinion. I can definitely see you coming back to this one later on and making it into a true masterpiece.

Just keep doing your best and in time you will definitely start seeing improvements.
