It's a technique/tool in Illustrator CS to CS3. Allows gradient blending from point to point fill-style in a shape. I have a screenshot of a vector I did in my scraps that shows it in use. mftalon is a great deviantART user that has perfect gradient map technique. His vectors are super-realistic and I think he might have some tutorials up.

oow .. i know that tool.. but i never use that though haha.. i really don't know how to use it properly, i've seen mftalon account, he's really incredible with mesh gradient tool. he has lot of tutorial about this tool in his website, i think i'll download it all haha..
