Description
Byleth gives his wife Rhea a ride on his shoulders. Rhea enjoys the sights of Fodlan, while sitting atop her husband's broad shoulders. Byleth on the other hand is trying(but failing) to hide his enjoyment of something else. Also, if this scene looks familiar, its a VA joke on Rhea's part. Can you tell what it is?Rhea is honestly a very misunderstood character. Many dismiss her as a crazy religious tyrant, yet are quick to defend Edelgard, who declared war on Fodlan and sided with Those Who Slither in the Dark. Sure, Rhea has done some questionable things, propagating a false history, attempting to bring back her mother through Byleth(though the methods probably aren't literally taking over Byleth's soul) and can be ruthless towards those, who violently go against the Church of Seiros. But if people take the time to look past all that, she's a rather surprisingly complex character.
In the distant past, Rhea, who was known as Seiros witnessed the genocide of her people, the Nabateans, by the Agarthans, humans who advanced technologically. Rhea even saw her own mother get murdered by Nemesis. I'm going to assume the method of the murder was extremely brutal, via Sothis having her own spine ripped off from her body. These events were psychologically traumatizing to her and even after getting her revenge on Nemesis, she is still unable to find peace.
Throughout the centuries, Rhea strived to maintain peace for the people of Fodlan, despite the fact that humans were the ones responsible for her people's genocide. Think about it, she could have decided to wipe out humanity, after what happened to her people, but instead she tried to guide them to a better path. Sure she falsified history and suppressed much of Fodlan's technological development, but she still did what she believed was best for the people.
Her interactions with other people can vary, with allies, she's gentle and motherly, but with her enemies, she's quite ruthless. However what is often overlooked about Rhea, is the fact that she is a very lonely person, unable to truly open up and confide with others, even Seteth and Flayn. In her interactions with Byleth, she insists that he refers to her as just Rhea, instead of Archbishop, indicating a longing for companionship. Despite only knowing Byleth for a relatively short time, she was more than willing to talk to him about her past and this was before she learns about his connection with her mother Sothis.
I'd like to interpret Rhea and Byleth's relationship as sorta like Pygmalion and Galatea respectively, from Greek mythology, fitting considering Rhea's named after the Greek Titan Rhea, wife of Kronos and mother of the Olympians. Personally, I don't see their relationship as incest, yes she created Byleth's mother, but its possible she did it via technological means, like cloning. Her seeing Byleth as her mother seems to be rather misinterpreted, its more like she sees her mother's "presence' within him. She does display attraction towards Byleth after his fusing with Sothis, but is clearly directed towards him regarding his new hair and eye colors, that she seems to have a thing for.
Many say that Rhea and Edelgard are very similar in many ways, while also being different but what really stands out to me is their endings in their respective routes and how their characters developed. In the ending of Crimson Flower, Edelgard succeeds in her goal in toppling the Church and then leaves the people to their own devices. Sure to fight the TWSITD, but the fact that she just leaves and doesn't see the aftermath of the war through is kinda irresponsible to be honest. She also doesn't suffer any repercussions for her dealings with the TWSITD, nor does she really feel any guilt for the suffering she caused in her war, indirectly or otherwise.
Now Rhea on the other hand, does suffers the consequences of her mistakes, and by "suffer" she pays dearly for it, by becoming a prisoner to Edelgard, in every other route outside of Crimson Flower. After being rescued, she promises Byleth to tell the truth, and she kept that promise despite her weakened state. In her S-support, she questions whether she has the right to go on living, after everything she has done in the past. Here is where she truly differentiates her from Edelgard, she became humbled after much suffering and seeks to atone for all her mistakes, with the help of Byleth of course.
Wow!!! I never thought I would write a whole essay, about a fictional character, that I like. Rhea is not perfect, but I think that's why I love her so much, she makes mistakes, she may give in to selfish endeavors, she has flaws, which make her feel human. Surprisingly, she became one of my favorite characters in Three Houses. She's also my favorite pairing for Male Byleth(not Female because I'm only into straight pairings). Her gentle and motherly personality are among the features that appealed to me. She's also very beautiful in her facial features and for added bonus, she has a really attractive voluptuous figure, especially after the reveal of her Summer look.
