Description In my Art Class, we had to make a pencil drawing, using lightning techniques based on an existant piece of art, keeping some original elements and adding a few more. My was inspired by a World of Warcraft concept. It's been a while that I didn't draw a Harry Potter fan art, in college I used to draw something about the series frequently...

I made it, in a A3 format paper. On pencil. 54cm X 60cm.

Hope that you could forgive me for mistaking the Hippogryph for a Gryph.

The whole thing is made from pencil? I can understand if it's charcoal, but making this whole thing with just pencil is....exceptional.

Beautiful! The shading and detail is excellent. I love the clouds and the way Buckbeak looks very proud. Harry and Hermione are well drawn and the expressions on their faces match perfectly with the book.

I agree with cazamonster - there is a lot that could be fixed. Nonetheless, congrats on the DD

I'm very disappointed that they chose to feature this as a DD, not only because it's referenced from an old piece of Warcraft art, but because -there are BETTER pieces in your gallery.- It's a shame.

As for the piece itself, you didn't change much between the reference and your interpretation. About the only thing you did was break the griffin's left arm. It's elbow is bent backwards, almost like the poor beast was in a terrible accident. The shading between it's broken arm and its backleg isn't clear enough so it looks like its leg is sprouting out of the arm feathers with no torso in between. Quite strange but easy to fix with some adjustments to the shading. You drew the wing sprouting out of its hips, possibly because of where you placed Harry's leg. It's almost like you drew Harry first and drew the griffin afterward.

I think these mistakes are a result of you referencing the source material too closely without understanding the underlying structures.

Yep, I got a little disappointed by that as well. Never got featured, and when I did, it was a referenced art piece exercise.

Thanks for all of the tips.

FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature? A critique is fine, but if you don't like the fact it is a DD, that is another matter.

cazamonster In reply to WDWParksGal [2011-08-09 03:43:45 +0000 UTC]

I did leave a critique. I also expressed my concern over why this was chosen over the many other non-referenced creative pieces in this artist's gallery. There was no flaming involved.

When you question why it is a DD, it is best not to say so in a comment. I thought it was very well done. I did quickly look at the gallery but this was recommended and I liked it. Referenced works are allowed on dA. To verify, you may ask $realitysquared

Nothing wrong with referenced work so long as the references are made known. It's just that, compared to the creativity in their other submissions, this was a curious choice to feature.

This one was recommended and I like traditional works of the Harry Potter characters that refer back to the book descriptions versus the movies. I really like the movies, but the book descriptions for the characters are appreciated. Thank you for your input.

I've suggested other pieces from the deviant's gallery before and theyre never been accepted.

FineShit In reply to VelCake [2011-08-08 21:58:05 +0000 UTC]

It's not your fault lol. You should look into deviations a bit more before you suggest them though. :/ There's way too many stolen works on this site.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VelCake In reply to FineShit [2011-08-09 01:39:33 +0000 UTC]

You wouldn't say that if you had a 512kb/s internet. Opening pages is horrible for me, and I still manage to suggest everyday and get rid of my dA messages even if takes me hours
Besides, this isn't stolen. The concept/pose/whtever may be the same but the work is done by the deviant himself. But then again, who doesn't get inspirations, even if direct? That's soemhow hypocritical if you ask me.

FineShit In reply to VelCake [2011-08-09 03:37:05 +0000 UTC]

I would, because I've done more on less when I was younger and had that time to piss away.

I think it's just really not fair because this deviation makes him seem... blah. It DOES make it seem like he's a tracer- but then the rest of his gallery shows he has alot of talent.

*forgot to leave a comment earlier*

I find this piece beautiful in of itself.
the perspective is breathtaking, of Buckbeak POPPING OUT from within the clouds with harry and hermione on his back. it gives such an impression of Movement, like a film shot or something.

also I love all the details in both Harry and Hermione
and just how... adrenaline filled/action the entire thing is.

Bravo!
