Description In my Art Class, we had to make a pencil drawing, using lightning techniques based on an existant piece of art, keeping some original elements and adding a few more. My was inspired by a World of Warcraft concept. It's been a while that I didn't draw a Harry Potter fan art, in college I used to draw something about the series frequently...

I made it, in a A3 format paper. On pencil. 54cm X 60cm.

Hope that you could forgive me for mistaking the Hippogryph for a Gryph.

I see no difference between the 'internet' and 'real life'. We're still real people, no matter if in the streets or in front of a computer screen.

The internet is completely impersonal. If you choose to take it personally, that's your problem. But it's so easy to distance yourself from online issues, and you would do well to learn to do so.

Then things like this wouldn't bother you so much.

Love and hugs, etc.

I don't think so. You chose to take it impersonally, then that's your problem too. Each one with their choices. I don't really regret worrying things that happen due to my choice though.

if it were another user's work, then it is not ok. I've been putting off doing a free lineart makeable using fella. If others can trace other logos, mascots and animation/comic images....then Fella should fall into the "traced from screen grab from a cartoon"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WDWParksGal In reply to Kuwaizair [2011-08-09 02:44:24 +0000 UTC]

deviants use Fella all the time and put the deviations in "devious fun", which is its own category and can be DDed. This work is drawn by hand, not traced. DDs are given to deviants who draw copies of celebrities and yet those do not seem to cause the ire of deviants like drawings using a reference. Feel free to check with $realitysquared , as I have, and he will explain deviants can post works using references.

it just seems to show, "hey we like copies more than originals. don't even bother drawing something yourself. Just grab a photo you don't own and draw it as close as possible to the original"

I screen captured an email I got from National Geographic. perhaps the DA staff wants their own reply on how they would really really not want to see people copying their photos for things.

as for "reference", they say true reference is many sources so you will know where "the legs go" if you are drawing something.

and tracing? this site has a whole gallery now for traced baces. I'm sure one day someone will get one.

Traced bases? Not sure what those are. Speaking of National Geographic I have seen art based on their covers.

[link] oh yeah. nobody draws from their covers.

look a print. I thought we are not allowed to sell prints of copies

[link]

how about another? how many people can rig up a composition like this without copying? or even memorizing.

Just because deviantART users seem to associate tracing with digitally copying anime screenshots doesn't change the traditional meaning of the word, which is exactly what you said.

Light box. They used 'lightning techniques'. I assume by that they mean they used a light box.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

WDWParksGal In reply to FineShit [2011-08-09 02:46:09 +0000 UTC]

There was no mention of a light box. The assignment was to use a lighting technique, not use a light box. FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FineShit In reply to WDWParksGal [2011-08-09 03:34:56 +0000 UTC]

To be fair, he said lightning technique.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WDWParksGal In reply to FineShit [2011-08-09 04:05:52 +0000 UTC]

Doing photomanipulations for years, as well as reading lighting tutorials, when the word "technique" is used it is, usually, referring to a style and a way to do a type of lighting. I'm not sure why it would be construed as using a light box, which is quite different.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FineShit In reply to WDWParksGal [2011-08-09 04:26:11 +0000 UTC]

Having gone to school, when people say 'lighting technique' they either mean light boxes or lighting- considering you learn how to use light boxes to improve technique.

I'm not sure what the hell "I've been doing photo manipulations for years" was even supposed to do.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

WDWParksGal In reply to FineShit [2011-08-09 04:41:33 +0000 UTC]

When doing photomanipulations, especially for challenges and contests, the concern is the light source, as well as lighting techniques. If you have suggestions for DDs be sure to note them to the applicable CVs.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FineShit In reply to WDWParksGal [2011-08-09 04:48:45 +0000 UTC]

Why is it 'especially for challenges and contests'. Whatever happened to improving for the sake of being a good artist? :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WDWParksGal In reply to FineShit [2011-08-09 05:47:20 +0000 UTC]

You are absolutely right about that. I was just making a point. I come from a large family of a wide-variety of artists, from a sculptor, to a commercial artist, to a fashion designer, to a glass-blower, so I just adore all types of art.

people are saying how great the prespective is. but they copied someone elses pose. how can one be praised for piggy backing on another's work?

someone can play songs well, but you don't call them a composer if they can play someone else's work well.

I immediately knew that it's 95% World of Warcraft art, and 5% Harry Potter. And while I do like the technique and overall look, it's still shameless copying to me.

It really is unfortunate that this piece has been featured instead of your other pieces.
