This is just plain trash that can't be considered art.
I don't think I'll ever get above the artistic talents of a ten year old. I draw just as bad as I was a little kid.
And my writing isn't much better.
Well, whatever.
Advice and feedback is always nice. Although I already know this is terrible.

Using references is a great way to practice anatomy, don't be afraid to!
I still have tons of issues with drawing people even though I've been doing it for awhile,
the more practice the better. Try drawing things from life, it will help you differentiate between the way you imagine things look like and what things actually look like.
Here's a source of references for you to use : [link]

Solitude6 In reply to thinkingorplotting [2010-09-28 22:50:51 +0000 UTC]

IT'S NOT HOPELESS
I will show you something else: [link]
You are on the right track, all you have to do is try.
Seriously, don't be so discouraged, drawing is a wonderful thing and given enough
time and direction you'll improve. It's a bit of hard work, but it pays off.
I was in the same boat as you and look where I am now

thinkingorplotting In reply to Solitude6 [2010-09-28 22:53:52 +0000 UTC]

That art is better then mine.
I'M IN 10TH GRADE AND I DRAW LIKE SHIT.
I've NEVER been able to improve when it comes to art (or my handwriting)!
And when I come on dA and see all this awesome art, I KNOW I'm never going to get that good.
I've tried and tried,but I can't.
I'll keep trying, but I don't expect (and no one else should) for me to get any better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Solitude6 In reply to thinkingorplotting [2010-09-28 23:16:46 +0000 UTC]

Firstly, you're about at the stage I was in the middle there and secondly,
my handwriting is deplorable, this is why we have computers lol xD
Anyways, it doesn't matter how old you are or
how long you've been doing it. Everyone advances at
their own pace, like look, it's not like you're drawing stick people
and you've got a grasp on where things should go, that alone says enough.
You just haven't recieved the proper guidance, it's like walking into
a brick wall without any sign of a door, sometimes other people must show you in the right direction and thats fine. You have skill, you just need to harness it.
I am pushing this because I know how you feel, I must compete with proffesional artists everyday I go to class, and it can be discouraging on any level. But perservere!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thinkingorplotting In reply to Solitude6 [2010-09-28 23:19:49 +0000 UTC]

I DON'T have skill. I can't draw, I can't write, and my only strength is academics.
Regardless of what guidance I get, some people are meant to fail while others don't. And I'm one of the failures.
I will never even get to be a fourth as good as you.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Solitude6 In reply to thinkingorplotting [2010-09-28 23:30:52 +0000 UTC]

Well, you know what you do best, but
having a negative outlook won't do anything
but depress you :c
Aside from all this,
guidance shouldn't be disregarded, it plays a giant
factor in improvement, you just need to find the right person.
I wouldn't be a fourth of the place I am now without having
had my teachers help me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thinkingorplotting In reply to Solitude6 [2010-09-28 23:37:47 +0000 UTC]

I don't think I'm being negative. I think I'm being realistic.I'm just taking my past experiences and knowledge and came to a conclusion.
My art teachers could give two shits about me. They only care about those who have promise and even that is a rarity. Besides, I don't take art this year.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Solitude6 In reply to thinkingorplotting [2010-09-28 23:55:29 +0000 UTC]

It's good to keep things in perspective, but you can dream big!
Even if you feel like a failure, you can at least do it for
own pleasure and fun. If art really makes you feel like that,
then I dunno what to tell you. I chose art because it was challenging
for me, and I like being miserable about as much as I like feeling proud.
Your art teachers aren't actual proffesional artists anyways, they are
trained in pedigogy most likely. I don't know what your school is like, but that basically means they just have to sit there and get you to do something for 75 minutes of their day. It's just kind of a general overview, and I actually learned
just about nothing from my own art courses in highschool.
My art teacher got arrested for having a meth lab in her basement lol, which I think says alot...
You can seek better courses outside of school, I'm sure they are oppurtunities
around your area. But really really, if you're feeling like that then
focus on things that you are good at and make you feel good.
If that means putting drawing aside as a hobby, that should be okay.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thinkingorplotting In reply to Solitude6 [2010-09-29 00:00:52 +0000 UTC]

There is barely anything available outside of school in this area and even if there was, my parents wouldn't let me go. I live in a poor city, and art teachers now have to buy their own supplies for class. From what I know of, the only art teacher I did have DID have an art degree, but she was laid off. I actually enjoyed her class. (our class periods are only 39 mins)
I WANT to draw, but I CAN'T because the art I create is just PATHETIC.
Besides, I have no talents or hobbies.
I am rather a loser of a person.

Solitude6 In reply to thinkingorplotting [2010-09-29 00:23:37 +0000 UTC]

Why not? Anyways, you're going
into adulthood and those kinds of choices can be yours
if you really want them to be. It's not like you're going
out to deal crack. It's all part of becoming an individual
and finding your own liberties. But yes, it can be risky, and
of course I don't know what kind of relationship you have with your parents
so thats all on your judgement.
Ugh, that really bites, highschool sounds like sad place for just
about everyone, so I guess you have more classes during the day?
I only had four I think...or five, it was kind of awesome that way lol.
Do they use those cheap watercolour pucks for painting there too?

Then if you want to draw, don't let those feelings stop you.
They will only hold you back from your potential, your art
is your expression. It wouldn't exist without you, thats what makes it wonderful instead of pathetic. The process is frustrating, accepting the level you are at now is good, but to be really realistic
is to realize that you can obtain higher levels. How much higher is your choice, but it's something to hope for and work for. I believe you can do it.
You said you're good academically right?
That can be a huge advantage in life regardless

thinkingorplotting In reply to Solitude6 [2010-09-29 00:29:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm only 15. >':

And yes, we have nine classes per day.
I never did use paint in art.
I don't like drawing full body, but I really, really love to draw hands, but they don't come out that good. :/

Solitude6 In reply to thinkingorplotting [2010-09-29 00:37:58 +0000 UTC]

I said going into (although I assumed you were 16, so my bad) Not quite there yet lol, so don't push yourself so hard. I meant it just in the way of testing your boundaries, it's normal around your age. I did crazy things enough when I was 15 I guess xD

That's alot, yech (oh..then nevermind. We had crappy paints).
Well, you know, start drawing your own
hand from life, and since you can't find classes, I'm sure you could
find a book at your library or uh...Barnes and Noble? I don't know what bookstores the states have. Anyways, I'd love to see what you come up with! There are exercises
that can help you improve, there's theory that can help you in art too, it's not
all about drawing as much as it is understanding what it is you are trying to draw.
