Um, this funny, don't get me wrong, but I kind of take offense at the last panel. I am the oldest of FIVE children. There is nothing wrong with parents wanting to have more than the average (about 1.96 as of 2010) number of offspring.

He's simply repopulating airbenders.

By Polynesian standards, 4 is small. Try popping 12 like my grandmother.

Hey! Just 'cause someone have more then 3 kids doesn't mean they're horny!
I've got four little siblings, and my parents would've had more if my mom hadn't had c-sections for all for us.
But this is pretty funny :3

Well, technically, since he is the last airbender, he does sort of have a responsibility to repopulate the world with airbenders, and being with a woman who either doesn't want or can't have children would present a big problem. That conflict between two lovers, no matter how strong the love, could tear any relationship apart, sadly.

This is great. I always thought it was the not wanting children thing that caused Lin and Tenzin to break up.

That was kind of funny, especially Tenzin at the end there. But this does bring up interesting ideas about what pressures that Tenzin might have faced to carry on the Airbender gene. It's entirely possible that Lin and Tenzin grew apart due to Lin not wanting to have kids because that happens in real life. But at the same time, I think that that wasn't the only reason.

But yeah, it would be interesting to explore if Tenzin's kids end up feeling pressured to have a bunch of airbabies when they're older. I think Tenzin and Pema would be happy if their kids are happy, but what about society in general?

No birth control, yo.

Compared to the stuff people get up to nowadays, four (prob + a few more) times in ten years is pre-tty tame.

Demon-Bender In reply to MetellaStella [2012-06-18 08:54:08 +0000 UTC]

Not true. Hormonal birth control is relatively new, but throughout history people have used a variety of methods to control how many children they had, some of them being more effective and safe than others. (For example, drinking mercury=not so safe. Various types of herbs=relatively safe depending on the herb.) Also, condoms have been around for a while, it's just recently that they've been rubberized.

Or do you mean that Tenzin and Pema aren't using any? I think they might be, because there children are ages 10, 7, 5, and newborn, which suggests that even though Tenzin and Pema want lots of kids, they are spacing out the pregnancies in some way. (Which is a good thing because pregnancies in close succession of one another are not healthy for the mother or the baby.)

I know, but how reliable were any of those? :-/

I think that there's a big chance that air monks, with their emphasis on non-worldy things, would consider sex as for procreation only. *shrug*

Demon-Bender In reply to MetellaStella [2012-06-18 19:36:21 +0000 UTC]

I'm not an expert on ancient methods of birth control, so it really just depended on what people used. I did hear something on the History Channel about how the Romans drove a plant to extinction because they were using it to prevent pregnancy, but I can't remember what it was called. So I guess you'll just have to research it.

It is possible that the Air Nomads only used sex for procreation, but either way Tenzin and Pema are doing something to space out the pregnancies. I do think other nations have their own methods of birth control, considering that Mai is 14-15 years older than her brother and it seems like people who are an only child or only have one sibling are fairly common.

To be fair, they are the last airbenders so they pretty much have to get jiggy with it or else.

thirdmirage In reply to Dizzardy [2012-06-17 15:37:04 +0000 UTC]

True. I think Tenzin probably waited for Lin to change her mind, but I see her as the ambitious kind so eventually they grew apart.
