Funny story, I was talking to two friends earlier today, one of them much older than I am and both infinitely more skilled and academically successful.

"What've you been doing with yourself lately?" the eldest asks.

"I've been learning about Brazil." I answer

"Didn't they invent bikini waxing? What're you learning about it?"

"The fact that they have big butts and you can go nude on all the beaches." the younger interjects, grinning.

Excited that someone is actually willingly initiating a conversation with me about best South American country, I begin to spout Brazilian trivia like a busted fire hydrant, starting with the correction that not all beaches in Brazil allow nudity or topless women, although I've often heard it said that tourists are easily told apart from natives as the latter do show a lot more skin. I'm afraid my spiel wasn't exactly titillating, reeling off the histories behind place names, the percentage of Amazon rainforest contained within Brazil's borders, and threats to biodiversity. And the smoking snake, you can't forget the smoking snake.

They're both very smart, the eldest's been around the block several dozen times and the youngest is well versed in East Asian history and loves educational programs like Adam Ruins Everything, which made it all the more paradoxical that the swastika scribbler who gives Adolf Hitler a birthday present every year had a less stereotypical view of Brazil than either of them. :'D

The gods have a sense of humor.
