Description
Thanksgiving has never quite sat right with me, I think it's a pretty bizarre holiday. For one thing there's a lot of debate over whether or not the famous Thanksgiving dinner between the pilgrims and the indians ever took place (even if it did we all know what ultimately became of those indians, so all that stuff about harmony and the setting aside of cultural differences rings hallow anyway) and it's one thing for someone to hunt and eat a wild turkey when the crop fails, they don't know their way around the strange new plant life, and their 17th century pioneer family is starving, but when someone's strolling down the aisles of a 21st century super market and they'd rather lend their wallet to industrialized mass murder since because muh tradition than buy some nuts or a multi-vitamin or something... ja, nein.Es tut mir Leid, but anyone who does that is legally obligated to report immediately to the Anti-Cognitive Dissonance Office to swap their righteous indignation badge for a hypocrisy pin. I often think to myself how sad and somewhat amusing it is that Western man has spent the better part of a century wringing his hands over the actions of a dead Austrian and his long defunct political party, glaring at the television screen during war movies and documentaries like it's the two minutes of hate whilst tucking into the honey-glazed corpses, stuffed intestines, and baby-cow body parts on his plate without a moment of pause or a shred of self-reflection.
The human mind is a Gordian clusterfuck of inconsistencies.
What makes it especially sad is that turkeys, far from the dopey bird in the old wives tale who drowns in the rain because he won't close his mouth, are actually surprisingly complex, intelligent animals. They're social, playful, curious, they have a very distinct appearance, "I'm a little surprised Disney hasn't made a movie about them" I thought. That got my gears turning, and before I knew it I had a wily old turkey OC with a French accent. Why French? Because from what I've read the French were the first Europeans to come across turkeys in North America, which would explain why earlier Americans often referred to them by the French term for a male turkey "dindon," which sounds a lot more elegant when they say it because American English ruins everything. :')
I think old Dindon here was raised by a 17th century French explorer, he's sort of the Caesar (Kimba the White Lion Caesar, not Roman politician/general Caesar) of the forest, having made it his life's mission to free animals from man's traps and spiriting away captive animals destined for slaughter into the wilderness, possibly gobbling "Liberté, égalité, fraternité!" to the treetops as he does so while all the historians writhe on the floor clutching their ears in pain.

So, here is the theatrical poster for "Jean-François the Dindon adventures". YOU'VE JUST CREATED THE VERY STARTING POINT OF A GLORIOUS ANIMATED MOVIE.

This also makes me think of the fact Benjamin Franklin was championing the turkey as the national bird, versus the bald eagle, as he saw them as far more noble creatures. Imagine how things would have gone for how the turkey was viewed if that were the case...

Won't lie, that squirrel on the tree made me think of Merlin in his squirrel form... Hm... -Rubs chin in thought-
Disney didn't make a turkey movie, but Reel FX Creative Studios made Free Birds, which... I give them credit, they didn't show turkeys as completely stupid, some were just really set in their ways of being pampered and spoiled until their inevitable deaths for being eaten. Comparatively, though, this is much better looking already, and we only have the bare minimum of knowledge on what the full story is. It doesn't involve a time-traveling egg ship, for one, so there's already a plus.

It does certainly look like something out of one of the better Disney movies! I agree, Thanksgiving is a very weird holiday.

He is magnificent!
I agree: goats, turkeys and a losng list of anomals are the sine qua non incarnation of stupidity, gluttony, evil, mention it... and without a fault, are smart, intelligent, loyal with their mates, parents second to none... Years ago, I read an account of a hunter that swallowed whole the 'stupid turkey' label... and finished ambushed by a huge male and at least five females that used him as a punching bag. Fools? My boots they are! They are warriors of the forest, tried and true. Just think about this: A fool doesn't survive for long an the wild.

Oooooh I didn't know that thing about French people being the first to meet turkeys in America.
Also, if you like the word "dindon" there's the word "pintade" too in French, which means "guineafowl". Pintade. I can't help it but this word makes me laugh. Especially when you say it with the Southern French accent. La pinetadeuh.
Gotta love that old Dindon. He looks like the old nice grandpa of the woods. Goood I love him. Also, that turkey lady on the tree looks beautiful. I find her really cute, she looks like she's admiring Old Dindon's for everything he's done!

I don't think the idea of having a day for giving thanks should be odd to anyone - though a lot of people will be thankful every day. It's the rest of the stuff that gets weird and increasingly horrific the more one thinks about it.
It's especially odd here because it's largely the unfavorite holiday for retail stores as far as Thanksgiving-themed stuff is concerned (at least in my area). It simply goes from Halloween stuff to Christmas stuff (if the two aren't side by side already) and the thing best known is the Friday after Thanksgiving for Black Friday sales.

Hem... in french, "dindon" is not a veeeeeery elegant term
"dinde" and "dindon" are used to qualify ridiculous people XD
But in your drawing, they look cool !

Really? I wonder if we get that from you, then; over here we'll often call someone a turkey if they're doing something stupid, like "you're cutting with the blunt end of that knife, turkey."

Hahaha, maybe ? We have a well-known expression : "Être le dindon de la farce."
It means being tricked, being the "fall guy" in your language

Lovely turkey pictures, nice.
I mostly just see Thanksgiving as a time to eat food and be with my family (and be thankful for them), I don't know whether said famous dinner took place or not also.

I really love how you drew those turkeys. They look like something from a Disney cartoon.
