Description
...of fuzzy, tinkly, whimsical cloud-dwelling Care Bearishness.(Please use the "Download Image option to your right for a larger, clearer version of this picture.
1. Atkinson film-arts Style - More commonly known among us fans as "Care Bears Battle the Freeze Machine" style or "Land Without Feelings" style. To me, the movement and physical appearance of these original bears seemed more than a little different than their DiC and Nelvana descendants. Their pudgy and pillowy-soft bodies often forced them to waddle as they walked, giving them a more teddy bearish look.
2. DIC Entertainment Style - As a youngster, my first impressions regarding the DiC bears were somewhat less than terrific. The creepy polarized reverse-pupils which stared into the depths of one's very soul, the massive white schnoz which hid their mouths and thus 90% of their expressive capacity, and their softly cooing and slightly raspy voices all pointed to the idea that I would be viciously consumed by these deceitfully cheerful creatures were I ever to encounter them alone and in person. Still, as the seemingly year-like months of my childhood crept by, I very quickly became attached to them (perhaps not least because of the fact that their snowy muzzles reminded me of another character which I was so very fond of - Yoshi!
Also, the animation was more consistent. Perhaps it was only my imagination, but the overall feeling of ever present calmness which guided the flow of the cartoon itself just seemed to have a certain subtle air of eeriness and quiet dread stealthily slinking about behind the series' mockingly sunny and pastel exterior, which really becomes apparent in some of the darker DiC episodes such as (my personal favorite) Drab City.
...Or, erhm... perhaps not. It could just be that I was merely horrifically tripped out. When I was younger, I mean. Back then... still, actually. What do you want? My mother dropped me on the head when I was kitten, alright!?
3. Nelvana Style - My unchallenged favorite, as well as what I consider to be the most well thought out version of the Care Bears' storyline possessing by far the best style out of the lot of them! The Founders, the Rainbow Rescue Beam, Grams Bear's timeless fairytale stories, the panda twins, this series has all of the elements of greatness we so fondly remember, and it's 100% watchable, re-watchable, re-re-watchable, re-re-RE- watchable and-- well, you get the idea. It's oodles of fun plus a barrel of Playful Heart Monkeys on the side!
As mentioned above, this particular brand of The Care Bears (mysterious Tenderheart clones and contradictions regarding the 1rst and 2nd movies aside) appears to have the most reasonable, realistic, and consistent story out of all of them...or at least it is as reasonable, realistic, and consistent as any fictional series starring a sky-dwelling race of talking three foot tall anthropomorphic animals can possibly be, anyhow! Any of the other versions, both old and new, all seem to portray the CBF as a bubble-headed band of cake loving, party throwing, zombified unconditionally loving happy machines, whereas the Nelvana bears have got a little more umph to 'em. Considerably more individualistic character traits and personalities aside, thanks to their more flexible and sometimes very wonky animations these little guys are perfectly capable of expressing deeper emotions of sadness, desperation, panic, bliss, and utter confusion. And when there weren't any impressionable human children about, these normally patient and benevolent bears could even prove themselves to be capable of emotions of exasperation, heated anger towards one another and even downright greediness, or some hurtful mockery from time to time. (As is made apparent during episodes such as The Lost Gift, The Long Lost Care Bears, Order on the Court, Home Sweet Homeless, The Best Way to Make Friends, and many others.
4. SD Entertainment (or AiCaL) Style - I hate this style. I mean I really, truly, honestly hate it. As in "I can physically visualize these puny puffballs callously slitting my innocent childhood's throat each and every time I blink my eyelids" variety of hate. I know it's only children's entertainment, but so was the 1986 series and yet you never saw THEM pulling cupcake powered rocket ships out of their asses, farting off caring missions in favor of playing belly ball 24/7, and F-ing FLYING with their tummy symbols whilst shooting radiant beams of light from their front paws. What is this supposed to be, Dragon Ball Z? Am I going to be seeing Oopsy Bear screaming at the top of his lungs for three episodes straight before going Super Saiyan and Spirit Bombing Uber-Grizzle's metal ass all the way to Snake Road anytime in the near future?
Actually, at this point that's just about the only thing that they could possibly do to revive this unsightly splatter of sewer sludge on the Care Bear franchise's previously untainted history up to a more respectable level of watchability in my eyes.
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the script writers for AiCaL also had hand in the making of the G3 My Little Pony films, as both of these series have got four sickening things in common: crippling political correctness, a strong aversion to negative, controversial, or dark situations, wearisome and predictable "love and light and hope and kittens" teamwork dialog, and the excessive use of non-existent words and aggravating phrases like "Oh my good golly gee williker gosh Funshine Bear, it sure is a fun-didley-idley tastical sunshine-a-rific-magnific day today, isn't it!?" Christ... the good guys never "used their words" to settle a life threatening encounter with evil when I was growing to maturity. What ever happened to the good old days, back when you could just whip out the Sword of Omens, bury it in your enemy's chest, then go home and be done with it?
Oh, we're ever so sorry kids. we'd love nothing more than to give you an enchanting and more thought provoking childhood, but that might be offensive to some unbearably fragile-minded individuals out there, so we'll just make up for all that by permanently damaging your optic nerves with blindingly vivid colours and blasting some hip new mediocre tunes into your ears! Hey, you kids won't be needing any substance as long as we can provide you with merchandising and sensory overload, right?...Right?
Heaven forbid this generation ever lay eyes on Felidae, Akira, Watership Down or Plague Dogs lest they all should start dropping like terminally ill flies with such frequency and in such vast numbers due to massive heart failure that the Japanese CIA will begin raiding peoples houses for Death Notes and inexplicable piles of discarded apple cores.
Personally, I think that the Geico drill sergeant/therapist said it like it needed to be said: "Maybe we should chug on over to Namby-Pamby Land where maybe we can find some self confidence for you, ya' jackwagon!"
(To my splendidly understanding and highly patient readers: my apologies for the uber-time-vampire-rant. But I did however warn you in advance of my seething hatred for these modern day Care Bears. Did I lie? xP)
5. ThisCrispyKat Style - I greatly enjoy this interpretation...although it's entirely possible that I could maaaybe just possibly be an eensy teensy ever-so-slightly itty bitty bit biased on that one! X}
99% of the praise, of course, goes to the animators of the classic Nelvana series as my somewhat upgraded version of the Care Bears are merely the slightly more complicated (and supposedly almost anime-esque or faintly Don Bluth-ish looking, or so I've been told) offspring of the authentic bears. Larger hair tufts, thicker fur, three-toed paws and a more movable looking set of thick fuzzy ears all help to give these fanspawn a more realistic and natural appearance. But perhaps the physical feature I like most about them are their eyes - apart from the watercolour paintings, stuffed toys, and the CG films I never once saw the Care Bears as being portrayed with irises. They say that the eyes are the windows into a person's soul, and I for one was constantly plagued by the Care Bears Family's total lack of any visible eye colour other than two solid black pupils ever since I was Hugs and Tugs' age!
Alright alright, so perhaps it wasn't quite THAT far back... but it wasn't exactly last Tuesday, either!

I agree with you on the SD version of Care Bears. The first time I seen an episode I thought 'WTF did you do to my Care Bears?' then came the pivitol all important up until now caring missions and it was like 'oh cool, the caring clock is chiming! Let's go play belly badge ball! The problem will work it's self out!' That's when I lost it. When True Heart came on screen with a pony tail talking like the younger bears I was like 'Nope nope nope nope! So not True Heart! She's the FOUNDING MEMBER of the Care Bear Family! Why do you have her acting like a spoiled rotten child? Where's the True Heart of old? The one who put the safety and well being of her fellow bears and cousins before her own? What happened to the Trueheart Bear that would put her life on the line if it meant keeping Care-A-Lot safe? What happened to the Trueheart Bear that taught Hugs and Tugs about the very first time the Care Bear family settled in Care-A-Lot and how they fought the forces of Dark Heart? Why? Why did you make her into a self-centered spoiled rotten vain teenage bear?'

I actually liked the "SD Entertainment Version", and I can remember it getting hate even back then.Β Also were you watching the same G3 My Little Pony that I currently watch?Β What exactly do you mean by "crippling political correctness"?Β It didn't have an aversion to negative situations either (neither did SD Entertainment Care Bears either).Β It's your opinion, but I don't agree with it... no offence.

IMO the Nelvana (how are they "Tenderheart clones"?Β ) and DiC versions are the best. I do love the ThisCrispyKat style though too though!
But yeah, Adventures in Care a Lot sucks.

I grew up on the Nelvana version of Care Bears, mostly via the movies(Minus Wonderland... I didn't learn about that until the past two years. I'm turning 28 this April, and I didn't know about the third movie until I was 26... Turned out that wasn't a bad thing, I missed out on the Cheshire Cat and Grumpy Bear rapping), with catching the odd episode of Care Bears Family when I myself was a wee little kitten. I didn't see the DiC version until I was about 16(And after growing up with Nelvana, that was kinda trippy to see), but it wasn't all that bad. Not Nelvana, just a style I wasn't accustomed to.
When I saw the SD Entertainment version, at first I was THRILLED, because I found the style cute... Then I learned that there were no Cousins, and True Heart Bear was not only the same age as the rest of the Bears, she was a REPORTER. And that filled me with an unspeakable rage, because it felt like they'd absolutely mangled her character. She will forever be the matriarch of the Care Bear Family, one of the two absolute leaders above Tender Heart and Brave Heart.
Changing the colors of some of the bears and cousins and having Secret Bear SPEAK did nothing to help. I'm sorry, but Proud Heart Cat will ALWAYS be tan/orange for me, and randomly changing bears from brown to blue will forever aggravate me, nothing on Share Bear's belly change(Because they didn't want kids to share germs... They clearly have never been around kids, because not sharing a drink will NOT stop them from sharing germs. These are the same age group that will pick their nose, eat the boogers, and then stick that same finger in another kid's mouth or ear, sneeze on something and then share it, etc.. Changing Share Bear's belly symbol from a float with two straws to two lollipops won't stop them from germ sharing!)

But still, who thought up the idea to not have Cozy Heart speak? In my opinion, it's unacceptable they can just pull tricks like that and expect us to accept it. Me, I'm not accepting it by not watching the new show. I haven't been doing it, just been sticking with the classic old series.

Well, I suppose to be fair, a fair few of the Cousins didn't talk in the original runs, did they? Admittedly this is me mostly only watching the movies, and in the movies I NEVER heard much more than six Cousins talk - Brave Heart, Playful Heart, Lots-a-Heart, Bright Heart, Cozy Heart, and Swift Heart. Even in the Christmas special, it was only Brave Heart and Lots-a-Heart.
I really need to watch the original cartoons more, man...

Yeah true...
At least Loyal Heart had a chance to talk in the DiC series (and Gentle Heart had five lines in the first movie)...sadly I think Loyal Heart was the most underused in the Nelvana series too.

Well now we havea new care bears show to addto this list... Welcome To Care-a-Lot..
it seems that the producers still persist on ignoring the existence of the Care Bear Cousins.. on top of that they got rid of the cloudmobiles.. replaced Hugs and Tugs with tenderheart's so called niece Wonder Heart.. and added as the villain a green batlike creature called... Beastly.
ugh... why they keep screwing the Care Bears over and over... the Nelvana incarnation is purr-fect in every way...

My favourite styles are Atkinson FilmArts and DiC, because they seem to bear a more closer resemblance to the original toys and greeting card illustrations, which is what I like about those particular versions of Care Bears. Drab City is my fav too. <3
I notice you skipped over the version of the bears from those direct to video 3D things, Journey to Joke-a-lot and The Big Wish movie. I can't blame you. XD
Most of the time with regards to kids shows being too, er, lame? Lame. Anyways with regard to that, the idea is that the kids go on to watch adult shows if they're ready, so there's no need for substance in kids shows. That's the principle anyways. I don't really agree with it. I've been enjoying that new My Little Pony cartoon like most adult men, but even that is best for the humor.
I like your style a lot also, though I gotta admit, I prefer the mitten hands. <3

I completly totally agree all of it Crispy
SD Entertaintment Style is the worst of all
You win a year supply of Chocolate chip ice cream with a free cookie
1. Atkinson film-arts Style looks more 1980 DIC Care Bears of bears look of ''Lands without Feelings'' and ''Battle the Freeze Machine'' of style of the plushes It look really Cool though
2. DIC Entertainment Style It's quite fine and good that the Care Bears are still the same style along with The Care Bears Cousins came heart: The villians were Professor Coldheart, Frosbite and Auntie Freeze before the Nelvana villians came after Coldheart is hate and no love by freezing everyone similar like No Heart hates everything making potions of uncaringc with the help of Beastly and Shreeky.
3. Nelvana Style is totally absolutly Awesome, Incredibley and Best Style of The Care Bears Family with the Care Bears and Care Bears Cousins
There some Care Bears who haven't spoke that much in some episodes like Harmony Bear and Secret Bear well she doesn't speak anything except when she's whispering on the ears like keeping a secret
Most The Care Bears Cousins have spoke except Loyal Heart Dog not in the 1st and 2nd movie which he has spoke only the DIC Style Cartoon but he's Awesome and So Adorable like Always
The Nelvana eipsode have reference like Care Trek from Star Trek, Cheer of the Jungle like George of the Jungle
Doctor Brightenstein's Monster from Frankenstein and much more fun of learning to care, share and love lessons
I love ''Bright Heart's Bad Day'', ''The Great Race'', ''Coconut Crazy'' and ''Order on the Court'' . The villians are very good done job for No Heart, Beastly, the dark shadows fellows and Shreeky but the were was two villians who had appeared was Dr. Fright in ''Bravest of the Brave'' and Sour Sam the pie maker in "Grams Bear's Thanksgiving Day Surprise". The Nelvana Style brings our childhood memories as we love The Care Bears
4. SD Entertainment is very terrible and very horrible style. I've seen a few and what i notice the Care Bears stare is so different only is to rub their tummy of glowing powers that's not Care Bears stare for nothing but the Care Bears Cousins don't appear and no villians This style doesn't make any sense at all
5. Your Style This CrispyKat Style you're trully the master artist of Awesome of Care Bears fanart that we all love you very very much
enjoying your Wondrful, Beautiful and Magnificent style of the Care Bears so so so Adorable of the Anime style, the eyes, the tummy symbols, the cubs, the colours, the background and everything
Keep up your best heartwork Crispy and remember we love you forever as our favorite Care Bears artist

You and I agree on this stuff pretty much 100%!
Nelvana is by far my favorite, though the movies do confused me quite a bit...
SD Entertainment NEEDS TO DIE! I watched a few episodes because my little cousin loves it so much and I almost starting crying. The color was blinding. The villain was horrid beyond imagination. There was no Grams! True Heart is just another one of the "kids" because there's no way in hell you can tell me those poor excuse for bears are adults! Hugs and Tugs are... I can't even describe it... they're too horrible. AND WHERE'S THE FREAKING CARE BEAR COUSINS DAMMIT?! WHERE ARE THEIR BRAINS?! SOMEONE TELL ME WHY?! WHY, GOD, WHY DID THEY DO THIS TO US?!
... I could seriously go on about that forever.
On to more pleasant things. I LOVE how you draw them. You are my favorite Care Bear fanartist ever. Sometimes I even think you're better the the originals.

This looks absolutely great. I'm 14 and yet I got raised on the good ol' Nelvana Care Bears (we had at least 5 tapes that came with our plushies, which later got donated to my 5-year-old cousin when she was only about 2 or 3 at the time). I agree with every comment you've made about AiCAL. It'll be a dark day when those kids raised on that generation getting Felidae or Watership Down in their hands (Hey! I've read Watership Down full-through and have tried to work up minimal courage to watch both the animated version of WD and Felidae D: I'm sensetive to excessive gore like that).
These are my thoughts on it:
Atkinson- I never...really got to see any of it. Go me XD But I HAVE watched the first few minutes of "Land Without Feelings" to prove a point to myself or something... and I CAN say that it's a good foundation of what is to come. Such a fluffalicious style (Is that even a real word? XD) and I think the teddy-bear concept was one they should have stuck with- kind of shows that they're more innocent and caring. But meh.
DiC- Agreed. That's kind of unjarring BUT you can see where it would be getting better as the generation grew more technological, and I have to agree with you on the points of the darker stuff (once again, I never really got to see any of this one either. CX)
Nelvana- Where it was at for me! I remember when I was about 5 and my twin sister (~Electrogirl101 ), my little sister and I were rewarded for good grades with our very own Care Bear stuffed animals. I got Share Bear, my twin got Cheer Bear, and my little sis got either Wish Bear or Bedtime Bear. Later on when we started to collect them more advidly, we'd be getting tapes of episodes with some of our stuffed animals. Those episodes were the best This goes for the movie, too. I remember a point in my life when I was incredibly obsessed with that movie to unhealthy limits. Yup, Nelvana was the best.
SD- My thoughts are up above.
ThisCrispyKat Style- You know I love your style.
Also, the jackwagon quote? Agree 100%. That's also my motivational quote in certain cases. XD

One other detail you forgot to mention in your style: You gave the Care Bears teeth! I know it's a weird thing to pick up on, but seeing teeth in smiles and even in everyday expressions gives more depth and realism to a piece of artwork.
