Description Cutie marks don't make a whole lot of sense, do they? I mean, Celestia's special talent is raising the sun, and Luna's is raising the moon, but during Luna's 1,000 year banishment Celestia oversaw the movements of both the sun and moon, so how does that work? You might say "Oh, well her cutie mark doesn't necessarily advertise her ability to only influence the sun, maybe she can move any celestial body, hence her name." So... Luna's existence is completely superfluous then? Ouch. Maybe this is the real reason she went mad with jealousy, she had one job and one night Celestia just trots up to her and goes "Hey sis, look what I can do!"

"But Luna helps ponies sort through their emotional baggage via dreams, and oversees the running of Equestria during the night." You might also say. Well, what exactly is there to run? Everyone's asleep. Unless a significant swathe of Canterlot's population are batponies, in which case why doesn't Luna just found a sovereign batpony nation locked in a state of eternal night rather then perpetuate this weird two-monarch system where one princess rules some of the population at night and the other princess rules the other half during the day? That sounds needlessly complicated. It's just asking for problems. Having a separate U.S. president to oversee the night owls or manage midnight tea parties and greet half-asleep heads of state would be a little... pointless.

As funny as it would be to watch a groggy Putin faceplant in his mashed potatoes, nothing's going to happen in the 8 or so hours when Trump is in bed that we'd need a second president to handle it, surely. If things in Equestria get really dicey, you just wake Celestia up, or dump it on Twilight, that seems to work. But the dreams thing kinda makes sense. Luna, Princess of Dreams... it has a nice ring to it!

Okay, but someone still needs to explain to me how Rarity apparently has three separate talents: finding gems, drawing, and tailoring. Then there was that weird spell she cast on that sea serpent where she fused her tail with his mustache, what was that? No, she didn't twist it. Twist a lock of your hair into a separate lock, now go about your day and see how long it holds. She seems to be able to use her magic for a number of things, not simply things relating to her special talent. Didn't Twilight say that was an unusual trait in the pony world? So far I've only seen Trixie, Starlight, Sunset and Twilight herself cast a variety of spells. Huh...

If Rarity had been interested in magic instead clothes, who knows? Maybe she would've been the one wearing the wings.

I personally HC that they were born elsewhere, pre-equestrian, so they were not born as alicorns in Equestria, but still could have been born alicorns.

Charanty [2017-01-23 01:02:05 +0000 UTC]

Excuse me? Tailors and fashion designers must be able to draw so this one is plus tailoring is actually very logical. It's a gem thing that makes no sense.

Also my theory is that Rarity studied magic more seriously than she lets on at some point of her life. Hence she can do stuff. But unlike Twilight and Sunset she's selftaught. Trixie probably has some formal education in this area.

KopaLeo [2016-12-02 04:17:31 +0000 UTC]

My theory about Celestia and Luna is that they are secondary gods. Discord is the first god who created everything, and Celestia and Luna are born from spirits of the Sun and the Moon. They have many manifestations, maybe one for each species. Pony Celestia and pony Luna are just their manifestations for ponies.
Sometimes a nation doesn't form a government with manifestations of Celestia and Luna in charge, and that's alright with them.
Their behavior isn't understandable sometimes, but most of the times they behave as if they are concerned about the welfare of creatures they created.
Celestia creates life by forming new souls from the energy of the sun, and putting it in new bodies in the living world. Luna takes dead souls and takes them to soul worlds.

For the magic system, my theory is that varieties of spells can be learned, it just takes effort. I'm thinking about languages. Being good at several languages is not too hard, just takes a lot of time and practice. Being good at more than 11 languages (hyperpolyglot) would take some innate talent (or not, depending on your theory of human talents). Learning a new spell wouldn't be as hard as learning a language, but the same idea applies.
Ponies who aren't talented in magic itself and aren't interested in being versatile in magic doesn't learn a lot of it, just like most humans only know one or two languages. Twilight's special talent and interests are both in magic, so she knows a great many of them. I'm not sure whether Trixie's interested in magic learning itself, but her talent and occupation in putting up shows requires her to know many magics that are at least visually impressive (though not powerful enough for subduing Ursa Minor). I have no idea what Starlight's special talent is, though she seems interested in magic studies itself.
I think there are many other ponies who can also do several different magics, at least at hobbyist level, if not professional level. Lyra in particular seems a highly curious pony and she might be good at several different magics. But these are not shown in the show because they don't help tell the story.

I think Rarity's special talent is finding gems (that's how she got her cutie mark). It's just not her favorite activity, which is fashion, so she learned drawing and tailoring unaided by special talent.
Presumably, if Rarity's special talent is fashion, and her favorite activity is also fashion, her fashion ability would be even better than she currently is.
Considering that humans still argue about "nature vs nurture", I don't think it's reasonable to expect human story tellers to make a model of Equestrian talent system that's bothΒ logically consistent and interesting for stories.

Names, occupations, and nationality makes less sense than cutie marks, especially the idea that they are born with and cannot be changed, or there's a "true name" or "true calling" or "root nationality".
The human story tellers for Equestria made the cutie mark system probably to model the occupation and nationality system of human world. The idea of nationality is very strange: it's something you are born with, something that should only mildly influences your behavior, but something that is used to interpret all your behaviors, and has so many exceptions in it that it doesn't help with interpreting any behavior because any and all behaviors can be interpreted as conforming to your nationality. The idea of a life-long occupation is a bit less strange, since practice makes better, so there's some benefit in keep doing one occupation.Β
And the "true name" system doesn't exist in human physical world, but does exist in human mind world. Humans are obsessed with roots and origins and being "real", as if they always exist. For example, "If I call the tail of a cow a leg, how many legs does a cow have? 4, because a tail called a leg is still not a leg." That's logical nonsense, and seems to make sense only because the speaker thinks there's something like a "true name" for that part of a cow's body, and changing the name of it does not change the "true name" of it.
As other examples, visiting one's "home nation" and finding one's "ancestry" both makes no sense, since they don't influence behavior unless one believes roots and origins are important, in which case they do influence behavior, or unless one believes that there are many races of humans determined by heredity and geographical location.

Cutie marks are like them in that they are born with (though invisible for a while), influences behavior somewhat, is an essential part of one's identity, is used in interpretation of almost any activity, and yet its actual influence on behavior has many exceptions.
As an example of how cutie mark system can be seen as paralleling the nationality system, the "What my cutie mark is telling me" song can be translated into a song about some human who finds out that their parents are actually from some other nationality, and wonders if they should change their behavior to live up to their new nationality.Β

You know, the more I think about it, the more I wonder how that 'rising and setting' of the sun and moon thing is actually supposed to work. I mean Equestria won'tΒ be the only country affected by that sort of thing. In fact, it almost certainly means that the My Little Pony world is geocentric since it's really not going to work otherwise (unless what Celestia does is, essentially, control the rotation of the entire planet).

It's good to see that someone besides me also thinks Luna should just break away from Celestia's Equestria as a whole and found her own kingdom. Where she'll be treated as an actual monarch and get the respect she deserves without her sister constantly stealing the spotlight. Cause' she is certainly not getting it in Equestria in the present.

And yeah cutie marks suck balls as a concept.

You made her so much more elegant than the TV show ~

See, Equestrian monarchy confuses me. If you have a horn AND wings, you're automatically royalty? What the crap? That's a questionable method of government, at best. The whole cutie mark thing also brings up some other questions. Why is it that when Apple Jack does chores on the farm far beyond the abilities of even other Earth Ponies, that's not called talents? It's just skills. Then there's the mayor of Ponyville - Who the heck gets a cutie mark in MAYORING? HOW did she wind up with that cutie mark? Like, was she just elected as mayor one day as a filly?

I could go into a whole other rant about the season 3 ending and how it treated their cutie marks(Special talent vs. defining personality trait vs. finding your identity in where you belong), but I've gone into that somewhere else - I think in your very gallery! I won't go repeating myself, though.
