I guess something in me just snapped when I decided to waste hours of my finite existence devote time to scrutinizing the current state of children's entertainment via Disney Junior. And to think there was a time years and years go when I thought The Littles was the worst show on the air. How do kids stay awake for this scheiss? Nothing happens. There's no danger, barely any villains and even when one does pop up the show never takes it seriously. He/she always does something cute or "random," just to assure the kids there's no real danger and nothing of lasting consequence is actually going to happen.
But the exact scene that derailed my patience came from an episode of a schei-- I mean show called Whisker Haven. More specifically the episode Night Knight Guard in which two toy advertiseme-- I mean characters challenge each other to a game of Chicken. At one point a spider is used to test their nerves. A cutesy-wootsy, two-eyed, clothed chibi spider with a tiny adorable hat. Nein. Nein. FICKEN NEIN.
"Oh, but it's meant for kids!"
NEIN. I happen to be an ex-kid, and I distinctly remember loathing it whenever a program aimed at my demographic babied me. I understood a lot more than adults gave me credit for, I think most children do, and I didn't scare easily. Even when I did scare I knew it was only a picture on a screen and didn't lose any sleep. And why do parents always think fear is a bad thing? I liked fear. I got a thrill out of horror and suspense, and I appreciated it when cartoons or movies respected my intelligence.
Family entertainment industry, listen, kids are not intellectually bankrupt porcelain unicorns. Scare them. Keep them in suspense. Have the hero lose. End on a somber note and let them feel sad every once in awhile, and fΓΌr Gott's sake don't talk down to them or dodge uncomfortable subjects. They're not morons. Tell it to them straight, it can only do them good and they'll appreciate it later. If you don't acclimate them to the real world via entertainment early, you'll raise a generation of wimps that constantly overreact to non-threats with hysteria, people who don't know what real danger looks like because they were never even introduced to the concept of danger.
Y'know, like Tumblrinas.
Do you want the entire world to be like Tumblr? No? Alright. Then quit pussing out and show those anklebiters a real verdammt spider .
TL;DR Help make the world a better place, scare small children with spiders. :'D

Okay, credit where it's due- this is making the Palace Pets series seem totally more modern and real. I can respect that. This being said, there's no way that Pumpkin would ever be that close to a spider- she's scared of them! Just saying.

You are totally right. Just because you're making a show for kids (especially for little kids), that doesn't mean you shouldn't try. It doesn't matter what age group you're aiming for when making a show. You have to put effort into it! And yeah, scaring kids a little isn't really a bad thing.
I've seen those pets and they're......not that appealing.Β

Nowadays, I'm tempted to think that the reason that these shows have 'pampering' themes is so they don't have an angry parent sue the company. We do live in a litigious society, after all. As generations pass, I think we (as a whole) are becoming more spoiled.Β
I felt the same way as you when I was a kid. For example, I grew up with The Lion King, The Land Before Time, and tons of other animated movies that had considerably 'scary' themes, but it didn't bother me. It kept me interested. I didn't have cable, but I had my animated movies.
EDIT: but I do give credit to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic for breaking the mold and bringing back some scarier elements for a show (originally) meant for little girls.

I just saw this so apologies for the late reply. I honestly do not see how MLP's reboot managed to bring back anything deep and scary to the children show's market. The show had some competent writers, and it kept a coherent story but really it hasnt done anything that shows that came before it haven't done better. Off the tip of my brain I can remember an episode of Disney's "Gargoyles" where one of them was playing with the cop lady's gun and accidently shot her resulting in bearly making it. Thats scary in a kids show. And MLP's current writing staff seem to have forgotten that they are in a magical kingdom of pastel colored equines and what do they do? Fucking football man. Mothereffing football!!!

I was (and still probably am) a hell of a dumb kid then. Because I like(d) these shows and never found them boring. And never liked scary stuff. I still don't like to be scared. Because who likes getting a panic attack?..
But I like spiders. Spiders are adorable.

I saw the toys of those characters in a few stores in my town before, but I had no idea they had their own show until I read the description of your drawing.
From a small peek on it, it reminds me of G3.5 "My Little Pony" and 2011 "Littlest Pet Shop" cartoons.
I can't help thinking the characters look kind of cute, but this looks much more interesting.

You make some bad points. But you make some good points that need to be dropped on people like bricks.
Don't baby your kids, teach them how to handle everything going wrong. Just because it's getting scary doesn't mean you should curl up and die. Kids should learn to control their own emotions. Just because you're making a children's show doesn't mean you're making the dumbest things you can.
However, the Littles were great, and all spiders must die. Must, not politely suggest they find another table.
after seeing whisker haven- They get enough cartoon physics and predictable stories, let them learn that spiders are horrible ugly anti-life monsters and that they should be removed from Creation.

Well that's a couple minutes of my life I'm never getting back, that was PAINFUL to watch! Though I think one of my biggest beefs with new animation aimed at kids, even REALLY little kids, is just really REALLY bad quality. I watched a song from The Lion Guard, and you couldn't tell they had elbows. They stayed bent at the SAME angle no matter what, walking and running were STIFF. I see much better animation with Littlist Pet Shop, and THAT show has some suspension of disbelief(Who owns a purple miniature panda? Who owns a PANDA as a PET?! Also, a pink monkey! Not even a specific species, just a generic monkey, because even though the production team could do the research to pick a SPECIFIC dog breed for this pet or that, heaven forbid they pick an actual species of MONKEY! I just did a side-rant there WITHIN a rant, I'm sorry :c ).
Seriously, I know animation was cheap when we were kids(Shit I feel old now), but it wasn't THAT cheap, at least you could tell they had fully functional SKELETONS.
That all said, surely there's some evil pet characters they COULD have used. What about Lucifer the cat? Or Diablo! Sufficiently dark and evil, without being too inherently DANGEROUS(At worst, Lucifer was a jerk) that they'd scare the Little Snowflakes. (Can't really say Jetsam and Flotsam, can I..?)

Honestly, the only defining factor about the Palace Pets, is that they're..well..cute. That's it. There's nothing else about their personalities, other than that they're cute. Plus, the Disney Princesses already have pets. So why do they need more? Hell, their original pets were more three-dimensional than these new ones. But like said, no kids TV show producer would risk making a show that will displease soccer moms. Unless of course, you're Rob Renzetti, or Craig McCracken.

heck, i remember that in the nineties, parents deemed Lord Zedd to be too scary for a kids tv show villain..Β and then the producers had to tone him down significantly to not lose audienceΒ
