Description Taken for my final project for digital photography. I went to a slaughterhouse for my final project on the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle. I had a lot of these guys so I had to cut a lot, this one included.

I really liked your slideshow! However I think where the animals were is actually better than most cows on major factory farms have it. Yet I'm sure the major factory farms wouldn't even open their doors to you...Mercyforanimals.com has some undercover footage for that. Yet, I'm impressed, actually visiting the slaughterhouse yourself? I couldn't do it.
I used to have a cow when I was younger. We raised him for slaughter. He was a baby when we got him. He was really sweet but I was always intimidated by him. He always wanted to dash over to you (at high speed lol!!) and say hi. But I still afraid of him. He was also very skiddish around huge crowds, like at the auction we had for his slaughter.
The day that he was going to get slaughtered elsewhere I sat on my front step and thought about it. I knew that there was something wrong with what I was allowing but I just didn't bring it to the front of my mind.
I now know better. He WAS and WILL ALWAYS BE my baby. I love you and miss you Bobo. Please forgive me <3

Thanks Oh I'm sure they do, this was a smaller, locally owned place. The pens were still quite small, but compared to other things I've seen pictures of/heard about they were better, bigger, which is sad to think about. I wouldn't have gone to a big industry, I'd be too scared, plus, like you said, they probably wouldn't let me in, though I admit I didn't mention I was a vegetarian or anything. My project wasn't about bringing down that company so I not endangering them.

I can see how cows could be intimidating, they're big and powerful! But I've always found them adorable and generally sweet animals. I'm sorry to hear about that >: I get attached to animals extremely fast (I cried over the animals in these pictures knowing they got slaughtered the next day, and I saw them for like 20 minutes at most). It's hard to know an animal you've grown to love was sold to be killed. Some people have a hard time really making the connection between animals and meat, especially when you're younger. I think it's something I've always made a connection about. I mean as a little kid not so much, but I didn't really know any better. In middle school cows were my favorite animal (they're still one of my favorites) and so I stopped eating beef. It was as simple as that for me. I like cows, so I wouldn't eat them. I didn't know about all the cruelty and that stuff then. It only took me a few years to decide to cut out all meat. It just made sense cause I love animals.

Nah it's fine. I have and I am transitioning more into that lifestyle right now. It's just not fully possible for me right now. I have some problems and while the people I see are fine with me being vegetarian and don't push me to stop, they do suggest I don't cut out eggs. I do buy humane eggs though, it's not perfect, but better at least. I buy from local farms that treat their chickens well, or I found a brand in the grocery store that claims to be humane, but I want to do more research on what they consider humane. And I have cut most dairy out of my diet. I never drink milk, always almond milk, I eat vegan cheese a lot, though I do eat regular cheese, but I've cut down my intake more. I don't eat ice cream. Things like that. But my school's meal plan restricts me food options way too much for me to lead a vegan lifestyle in a healthy way. Until I can cook for myself on a regular basis I can't safely do it. :\

It's okay. I was just curious I'm really glad that you are trying to make conscious decisions about what you are eating though. I actually live on a chicken farm with my parents. They have to be the luckiest chickens in the world. My dad spoils them and gives them our leftover food, sometimes whole cakes leftover from the food bank. o.O. They are completely free range too and roam wherever they please. I still refuse to eat their eggs because I believe that their egg is not mine to take, however I would much prefer people buy eggs from our farm rather than from factory farms.
That's odd that your school can't cater to your lifestyle? Have you tried talking the administration about it? Rather, talking to the cafeteria management? I'm sure that most schools would have your basic fruits, veggies, and grains, and I'd assume they would have also have a vegetarian section (some dishes most likely vegan). At a school I plan to go to there is a vegan group that makes their own food each day instead of eating in the cafeteria. I might join them, but the cafeteria food I had there on my visit wasn't too bad
Lol, I'm glad you worry about your health, but believe me, I'm far from the healthiest vegan and I seem to be doing okay. I'm just overall pretty lazy. I really don't cook much for myself, I just hate cooking But, I'm sure if you talk to management about it they would put out more vegan options.
Kudos to you for making conscious decisions

Totally understandable. I get the mentality that they're not ours to take. And it's great that your parents treat them so well!

And eh, not that odd. I don't go to a very big school and while they do cater to vegetarians and even vegans a bit, it's not really enough to sustain a vegan lifestyle, especially not in a particularly healthy way. Even just vegetarian is difficult there. But that's also partly just cause the food isn't great quality in general :\ I could talk to people about it, but I seriously doubt it would do much. I do want to see if we can get almond milk, but that's about all I think I'll be able to do xD;;; I am petitioning for a special meal plan cause unlimited is just stupid for me. They do have all that, more or less. But the veggies are basically just salad or whatever ones I put in stir fry. The fruit isn't usually in the greatest condition, and grains.... eh, options are low... bagels or bread basically. And our vegetarian section is just salads and stir fry..... not very exciting. Ugh I wish I could do that, but it's just not much of an option. I don't even have a stove/oven in my dorm Dx Oh I understand being vegan is very healthy, it's just hard when I don't have control over my my food and have medical problems. I'll transition into vegan more once I'm in a place where I can cook. Ahhh I love cooking! I'll look into it, but it doesn't change the fact that the food is pretty low quality. I just don't want to eat it in general.
haha thanks!

I do feel for you if you have a crummy school cafeteria I know my high school doesn't cater to vegetarians even that well. They have a veggie patty that I haven't bothered to check if it's vegan.(it looks horid in all honesty >.>) They do have some carrots and fries though. And their salad comes with cheese. LOL can't expect much from high school cafeteria anyway. But I haven't really mentioned anything because I bring my own food from home.
Sorry the food is crummy quality for you I would still talk to management about it. Couldn't hurt and it may work. I would actually ask the school about getting ricemilk as then people who are allergic to nuts could even drink it (make sure to get calcium fortified!) I know I'm allergic to soymilk and that is what a lot of colleges have in a little refrigerator. So yeah...I'd go with ricemilk. It's almost as good as almond milk.
You have an unlimited meal plan?? LOL I'd be raiding their joint of everything they had, even if it sucked xD Bleh I can see how stir fry could get boring (and rather salty and nasty) everyday...the chef needs to learn to make more veg items. If you are interested, PeTA has tips on how to veganize your cafeteria.
Good luck on your efforts, and I hope you will eventually feel comfortable enough to make the transition

It's really too bad how few and crappy the options are most places, even just vegetarian options.

Yeah I will when I'm back there. And we already have rice milk, but I've never liked the stuff. Almond is definitely my favorite! We have soy too, which is fine, but I just really love almond.

Yeah, you might think unlimited would be great. But nooooooo. I have stomach problems so the food makes me feel less than great. The stor fry is pretty good, you choose what goes in it so it doesn't have to be salty or anything, but I can only eat it so often....... same with the salads, not bad, but boring if eaten too much.... I've been linked to that before, but I haven't had time to look at it.

Thanks
