How often do you see these final compositions in your mind's eye when you make the shot? They're all so wonderful. I sometimes find myself making pictures with similar intentions (like today's on my blog, bailinphil.com/backlog/2015/1/… ) but often what I wind up with feels... predictable, lacking that mystery or abstraction that you get again and again.

It seems that often, you're using a fairly tight crop for the final image, but not always. So I'm just curious how often you have this in mind when you press the shutter vs. discover it when processing photos afterwards. (Naturally, I expect you are always shooting with intent.)

Hi Phil, thanks for your comment!

You are right. Sometimes I use a pocket camera which allows me to take original square photos (Ricoh GR with a fixed lens - no zoom). The fixed lens has in my case the side effect, that I have to look more carefully to the frame of my picture, because I have to move forwards and backwards to find the right frame. In this case I need no or only a litle bit of cropping.
For examle   or  .

In other cases (and that's the majority) I see when taking the picture already the potential of the abstraction I want to reach. But the taken picture is so far only the raw material. The final abstraction grows out of cropping and turning and playing with contrast and light. It's a sort of game, till you simply know that's it. The picture here is an example of that game.

The original photo was this (already converted in bw)  . Now you can search for the  cutawy I used finally ...  .

Of course you can make this picture already properly framed if you take time then making the picture. But I take my pictures mostly not planned. I see things when I walk along and take them spontaneously.

Hey, I just wanted to take a minute to say thank you for the detailed response! And I was really trying to look with fresh eyes for the kind of compositions you seem to be cranking out on my recent outings. I have a new, fancier camera, but I've been simply toting it along for runs, which doesn't really seem to serve either running or photography well. But I'll keep at it.

Thanks again, keep up the fantastic work, it's very inspiring.

I should probably post more of my shots here also, I'm a lot more active than my gallery would indicate.
