Description
SKR No.5 'Rusty' is seen at Crovans Gate station, the terminus of the Skarloey Railway.---
Rusty came to the Skarloey Railway in 1957 to assist SKR No.3 'Sir Handel' (ex-MSR No.3 'Falcon') and No.4 'Peter Sam' (ex-MSR No.4 'Stuart') with some work. Rusty assists with maintenance work on the narrow guage railway and would often help with breakdowns or accidents. Sometimes he would help out, in an emergency, with light passenger work. Once in 1958, Rusty assisted Peter Sam with the slate trucks, due to Sir Handel being 'ill'. However that resulted in Peter Sam's accident at the incline and Rusty has to help out with the work until SKR No.1 'Skarloey' returns from Gibbons Bros. Ltd in England. When Skarloey returned, Rusty went back to maintenance work. Around that time SKR No.6 'Duncan' came to the railway as a secondhand engine from a factory in Scotland as a spare engine. Duncan is infamous for his 'rock-n-roll' behaviour and Rusty had warned him about a bad piece of line at Cros-ny-Curin. Duncan, however, was rude to Rusty and detested him because he was a diesel. However the bad piece of line resulted into Duncan being derailed but thankfully Rusty had rescued him and they were friends ever since.
Around that same time, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), came to the railway to film a documentary about the Skarloey Railway. Rusty, along Mr.Hugh, who was Rusty's driver at the time, demonstrated to the crew how they maintained the line at Quarry Siding. *Although he maintains the line, Rusty would often find himself shunting around at the Blue Mountain Quarry taking trucks full of slate and rock to the wharf at Crovans Gate. Meanwhile NWR No.D5 'Paxton' takes trucks to the harbour at Barrow-In-Furness. But because of the amount of work he had to do, there was not much time maintaining the line and, with the other engines being unavailble at the time, the line started to corrode and the line had to close for the time being. This resulted in the Blue Mountain Quarry to purchase an engine of their own so that Rusty can look after the line instead, which would later be BMQ No.22 'Luke' who was regauged to 2ft 3in. The Skarloey line was soon fixed and ready to go for the summer of 1974.
Rusty still continues maintaining the line while doing some odd jobs here and there.

*I changed up 'Rusty Saves The Day' to at least give it a bit more sense and plus to add Luke into the picture. I found the S6 episode to be a bit bizzare what with the Fat Controller closing down the line.
