Description
-1952-While SKR No.2 'Rheneas' was sent to England to have a heavy overhaul, the thin controller, Mr. Peter Sam, bought two new engines from an Aluminium company in Peel Godred. The two engines had worked their since 1947 to help build the new company and were painted grey and were given no name or numberplates. However everyone called them by their original names, Stuart and Falcon.
Prior to their four year working life, they use to work on the Mid-Sodor Railway pulling passengers and trucks Stuart was MSR No.4 and Falcon MSR No.3. However the railway began to loose patronage when the Peel Godred Power Company agreed to have a branch line from Killdane constructed and was then later opened by the North Western Railway, which'd resulted in some hate for that company from one of the other Mid-Sodor engines that Stuart and Falcon had worked with. Originally, the power company had considered of using the Port of Arelsbrugh and the Mid-Sodor to transfer their equipment but the mountainious section of the railway proved to be a big obstacle for them.
Their were some good spells during the summer, but passengers continued to decrease to the point where trains ran almost empty on the mountain section to the point where that part of the line was closed in 1936. Sturat and Falcon, along with MSR No.1 'Duke', were the last engines on the line as had been sold to keep the railway afloat. The three engines kept the railway by running as much passenger and mineral trains running but when the roads took those jobs away, the line became what it was in the first place, a mineral tramway. With trains running only as and when required.
The Second World War brought an upsurge and they even had ex-MSR No.6 'Jim' from his new owner, Jim was one of the engines sold in 1936, to help out. Unfortunetly, Jim's cab exploded thanks to some ammunition he was hauling and the company gave him as scrap to the Mid-Sodor. The manager told him that they don't have the money to mend and he was left in a siding at one of the old mines and was never to be moved again, he would later be sold to a power station nearby the soon to be built Arlesdale Miniature Railway, but that's another story.
However, tracks and goods stock were in such bad condition and the mines began to suffer as well. They were deemed unsafe during the war, mines were used to store ammunition, and as a consequence they began to close one by one after the war in 1945. The only one left was Cas-ny-Hawin but by December 1946, it began to flood after ex-MSR No.2 'Stanley' had broke down. After that the railway was truly done for and was abandoned in January 1947.
While Stuart and Falcon went to Peel Godred, Duke however was left in a shed as many people who were interested in buying the engines thought he was too old. Stuart and Falcon had promised him to find a nice railway for him to keep them in order but no one knew what the future could hold.
Fortunetly things turn out well, Stuart and Falcon were bought by Mr. Peter Sam and they now work on the Skarloey Railway as No.4 'Peter Sam' (Stuart) and No.3 'Sir Handel' (Falcon). Duke was later found by people in 1969 and is now working at Ulfstead Castle while also helps out on the Skarloey Railway as their no.8 engine. Jim was found too in 2015 as the power station he was sold too had closed down due to a landlord's increased rent. The fate of the other Mid-Sodor engines is unknown but you never know what might turn up.
