The first Pixar movie ever made and the first computer-generated image movie ever made, as well. And for a first effort, this was actually really good. First things first, the concept is genius, I mean how many of us as kids imagined what our toys were doing when we weren't around. And the animation really helps illustrate that in a way that had never been seen before, at the time. The selection of toys they decided to use was also very interesting, like sure you have cowboys, space astronauts, potato heads, dinosaurs, piggy banks, and slinkies, but you also have little green army men, Etch-A-Sketches, remote-controlled cars, trolls, and many others.

The characters in this film aren’t super complex as they would go on to be, which makes sense. Woody is a huge example of this. He isn’t the most likable guy ever yet, due to his jealousy of Buzz stealing his spotlight. While it can be a little jarring at times, he still has plenty of other qualities to make up for it. He treats the other toys with respect, for the most part, it’s made clear he’s usually the one who makes the plans, and when Buzz gets knocked out of the window, you can clearly tell that’s not what Woody meant to do.

Buzz is a really good contrast. A toy who fully believes in the character he was made after and has no idea how the real world really works. It’s just how he’s so confident in believing that he’s a space ranger, and Woody getting more and more frustrated every time he brings it up. It’s because he believes this, that we feel bad for him when he learns the truth and has a mental breakdown, but by the end, Woody helps him realize that he doesn’t have to be a space ranger to be important, he can just be something that Andy finds comfort in and likes playing with.

As for everyone else, they do their jobs. Hamm has nice one-liners, Bo Peep plays her love interest role nicely, Slinky is loyal, as all dogs should be, and Rex is my favorite character. It’s the fact that he’s the most innocent toy of the bunch and he seems like the toy you’d want to be friends with the most. As for Mr. Potato Head, his cynicism can be a bit much sometimes, especially when he’s accusing Woody of knocking Buzz out of the window, but he’s still funny.

Sid is a serviceable villain. People have brought up the fair point that he’s not really evil, he’s just a kid experimenting with the toys he has, and while that might be how WE see it, that’s not how the toys see it. They see it as getting murdered. Be honest, if you were a toy, and you had your parts pulled apart and put onto someone else, would YOU see it as a kid using his creativity? No, you’d see it as him killing you. That factor, along with the fact that he’s mean to his little sister, makes it so you don’t feel that sorry for Sid when the toys scare him.

I also want to talk about You’ve Got A Friend In Me, which is one of the greatest songs ever. Randy Newman really seems to excel in songs that are about the good relationships we have with others in our lives.

Now, I was born in 2002, so I was way late to the Toy Story hype, and even though it might have been the first TS I watched, I don’t have any memories of watching it back then. But I was still familiar with the characters and the song, so it wasn’t like I completely glossed over it.

I think that about covers it. Toy Story is a very valiant first endeavor in the world of 3d computer animation, with good characters, good songs, a nice story, and a brilliant concept. I give it an 8 out of 10. It’s a good movie.
