If you were to name a main character on Sesame Street a few names come to mind: Elmo, Abby, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, etc. By now, we’re all familiar the muppets we see the most on the show, but not all of us know how long they’ve been there. So, I did some research, and I’m here to share my results.

Now for this, I’m listing how long these characters have been on the show (including spinoffs), so appearances on other shows, movies or specials, won’t count. But I will count if the characters had different designs, different personalities, or different names. So, without further ado, here’s how long all of the main characters of Sesame Street have been on the show.

Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Oscar, Cookie Monster and Grover: 50 seasons (1969-2020)
Snuffy and Prairie Dawn: 48 seasons (1971-2020)
Count Von Count: 47 seasons (1972-2020)
Telly: 41 seasons (1979-2020)
Elmo: 40 seasons (1980-2020)
Rosita and Baby Bear: 28 seasons (1991-2020)
Zoe: 26 seasons: (1993-2020)
Abby: 14 seasons (2006-2020)
Julia and Rudy: 4 seasons (2015 and 2017-2020)
Gonger: 3 seasons (2014-2020)
