Description It's L from Death Note; that's his shirt on the bed beside him, by the way. I drew this extremely late last night by flashlight after the rest of my family was asleep. Why? I don't know...I wasn't ready to sleep yet, and I sat down with a pencil and started doodling, and this is what I ended up with. Not bad for a random picture, if I do say so myself!

The window's curtains being drawn are symbolic of L barely ever seeing anyone face to face. Before working with Light, I doubt he saw anyone at all except for Watari.

Originally a pencil sketch; all shading and sepia tinting and watermarking done in Photoshop CS2. After all of that 3D stuff I just submitted, this is for you watchers who like traditional artwork better.

I actually drew a background, a very rare occurrence for me...enjoy while it lasts, I guess. XD; I already know the floorboards' angle is WAY off, don't worry. With shading it looks much more solid; this is, by the way, my first ever shirtless picture of L.

L is from the anime/manga Death Note, and belongs to Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.

I think this might have been my first-ever pic of him shirtless, actually. He's very...skinny. I just drew B shirtless recently (haven't posted yet; gotta ink first) and he's just as skinny.

I like it very much! It's the first time I see a pic about L in this way. I've been wondering about his lonelyness too, and foud this pic today, how fitting n.n

He must've been very sad and lonely all his life... You portrayed the feeling quite well. Good job!!

Aww...thanks for the thoughtful comment! I tend to think part of why L became friends with Light even while suspecting him of being Kira is that L never really had a person he could talk to both on an even intelligence level and within hiss own age group before. His loneliness made him want to be Light's friend even though he knew Light wasn't really a good person inside...so sad, poor L.

I'm not sure he was sad and lonely his whole life, or maybe he was but didn't know it. I think maybe he was so preoccupied with solving cases and such that he didn't realize how lonely he was 'til he came out in person and started talking to Light. That's just one theory, but interesting to think about!

Gah, I keep this up I'll hafta write L his own fic...

It's quite an interesting theory. I imagine that as a child, L might have been a little distant from the other kids in Whammys (though it's the sensation I have). Of course he must've had some sort of social contact, since he doesn't seen very uncomfortable around the task force members or Light. Like you said, in Light he found an equal and part of him wanted to become his friend or at least, interact with him more (again, that's how I see it too ^^).

Though it's an evident fact, not many people represent or talk about L's 'isolated' condition, that I know of.

And no prob! I'm enjoying the conversation^^

With somebody as smart as L, I'm figuring that they could tell from an early age that he was a genius. Since Wammy's House shifted all of their attention to grooming kids to be the next L after discovering him, he must have made an amazing impression on them--I'll bet they singled him out and started raising him under special circumstances to become the genius detective that he ended up being before he was even ten years old.

I doubt he had a "normal" (well, normal for Wammy's House, anyway) childhood. With how smart he is, he was probably already solving puzzles and cases that nobody could solve as a teen or a child, and like a famous child actor, he missed out on the whole social interaction part of being a kid because he was too busy doing other things that adults deemed more important. Since L's quirky and seems to do just fine being by himself for long amounts of time, it doesn't seem too out-there to imagine he thought it was normal to not interact with anybody else much at all.

This is all theory, of course--only the creators know for sure, and I doubt they've even though into it this much. It's fun to speculate about, though, and interpreting it in different directions gives me ideas for fanfiction.

If you write any, let me know n.n It'll be an original and interesting point of view! Your theories are quite sensible, I'm sure you'll write a wonderful fanfiction!

Hehe, I still feel a little bad for L. Maybe sometimes he'd feel he wanted to share something with someone else. We humans are social beings, after all. Of course we can get used to lonelyness, but we tend to join little groups or hang with someone who shares our thoughts, likes or somethig like that. Maybe because every now and then our feelings want to come out...

Anyways, I'll be waiting for the fic =3

Aww...that's kind of you to say, thank you! I try to make my fanfics believable. Sometimes I write some pretty strange stuff, though. XD; I think everybody does, hehe.

Yes...humans are social creatures by nature. That's why isolated or anti-social characters always give me good fic ideas.

My college quarter just started up again, and I'm working hard to finish my latest Death Note fic, so it won't be for awhile yet, but I'm definitely going to write a fic starring L more prominently. I'll let you know when I do!

It's okay, I know sometimes it's overwhelming to comment on everything you fav! I have this trouble especially when I love a person's whole gallery...because after awhile my comments start to all sound the same and I feel silly typing them over and over again.

Anyway, glad you like the picture! I think the little tiny bit of his face that you can see helps show how sad he is somehow, even though it doesn't show his eyes or mouth--the parts of the face that show expression. The way his head is bowed makes him seem sad...hmm.

I love it. its awesome. Say how do you use those tools in photoshop? I never learned.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Threshie In reply to valinorstwilight [2008-12-01 23:57:59 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I actually just used the regular old soft-edged round paint brush tool set at about 30% opacity for this one.

After tinting the background sepia, I made a new layer above it so I wouldn't ruin my lines if I wanted to erase and then painted on brown wherever I wanted shadows. I think the minimal style is a good thing in this case...I tried to only shade more than once on L, so that he's the darkest point in the picture and thus will draw the viewer's eye as the focal point.

Photoshop's fun and really powerful for artwork...I wish it wasn's so expensive to have a commercial version...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

valinorstwilight In reply to Threshie [2008-12-02 23:39:41 +0000 UTC]

yeah, ps is expensive. Even if I had it, I totally suck at coloring and I can't get the lines to look right. Your work is amazing.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Threshie In reply to valinorstwilight [2008-12-03 00:10:35 +0000 UTC]

Aww, you shouldn't be so hard on yourself before you've even tried the program! Making mistakes is part of the learning process--I've been using PS for years to get this good at it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

valinorstwilight In reply to Threshie [2008-12-03 23:51:25 +0000 UTC]

So it takes time? I've been only using it a 1/1/2 years. Maybe the problem is my low level of patience. That's always been my weakness.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Threshie In reply to valinorstwilight [2008-12-04 00:08:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it takes patience, but also it takes tutorials or constantly experimentation. You have to try different techniques until you find one that works for you. I've taken three years of college courses on graphic arts, including quite a few about how to use Photoshop CS2, so that's probably why I'm comfortable enough with the program that I can turn out good work fairly fast.

valinorstwilight In reply to Threshie [2008-12-05 00:55:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I tend to be a better writer than artist. I do fanfics and everyone who reads them say they're hilarious.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Threshie In reply to valinorstwilight [2008-12-05 03:29:06 +0000 UTC]

I'll bet they are! If there's one thing I've learned, it's that people are more sparing with their praise on fanfics than they are on art. It's easier to be impressed with a piece of artwork right in front of you, I guess, and also easier to assume anybody can write since almost everybody has access to a keyboard these days. Anyway, getting a lot of positive feedback is a great feeling, ne? I love knowing that people out there are enjoying and looking forward to my work.

Poor L! All lonely. Really good drawing though, all the soft folds and things look great. If you want any crit, the floor looks at a weird angle (to me). Otherwise, it's perfect!

Threshie In reply to AN-Pseudonym [2008-12-02 00:01:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I think L was very isolated until he got to work with Light and co on the Kira case, and that he was actually having a great time being around so many people for the first time. he DID say it was the first time he would show his face as L.

And... XD; Yeah, I knew the floor was WAY too slanted even while drawing it, but I didn't get around to fixing it before shading it and stuff, so...oh well. I should probably just have taken the floorboards' lines off and left it blank. Backgrounds aren't exactly my forte.
