Description
Yeah, that's what happens when you let me participate in valentine's day challenge for a Howrse coat. I wondered how I can possibly avoid kitch, glitter and pink, so I finally settled with silver and redI think it's the first time I used layer modes for such a large part of shading.
Made with GIMP-GPS.
Enjoy!

Thanks! Turns out it was just a little bit too violent to get to the actual game, but I'm preety proud of him nonetheless

This is gorgeous and incredible and heartrending. I'm with you on the horned equine matter. I like when they're clearly something not normal. Something otherworldly.

Thank you! Even if I usually keep my equines down-to-earth, this one represents a metaphor (and white is a traditional color for a unicorn) so I felt he'll need to be a little more stylised, flowing and dramatic, more shiny and silver than plain grey.
I like the fact that heraldric unicorn is almost something familiar (an equine), and yet its non-equine parts are surprising, distinctive for a different type of creature. They can be otherwordly, mythical, mysterious, or just strange and unusual, it largely depends on style and color.

What kind of metaphor, if you don't mind me asking? I kind of get a feeling of shock and betrayal from it.

(sorry for the slow reply)
As the theme of the challenge was Valentine's Day, I think that a primary interpretation can be a sudden fall in love, a feeling so shocking and powerful that it struck him down mid-stride (unicorn is a powerful, strong animal, so it can be a figure of wilderness and strenght that yields before a feeling).
I guess that the piece can be interpreted in a number of ways (e.g. as unicorn is a symbol of innocence, there can be a somewhat darker interpretation of amor's arrow as a symbol of lust that kills innocence). To be honest, I didn't have a fixed idea about the exact symbolical meaning when I was drawing him, so I'd leave it open for interpretation.

Glad you like them! I've seen a lot of heart-shaped patches on pintos or leopards, but not nearly as much of heart-shaped dapples!
