My friend Autumn (~carcadann ) had some great advice when I mentioned I wanted to put a rat in my picture. She said "Don't do a rat, because then people think "ewww, disease." Do a mouse, so people think "awww, disease!"
This took 3 days and was one of the most complex paintings I've ever attempted. I almost never do interiors so I thought I would try to redo [link] - the character in that painting was the basis for Emme Anders, my plot device from Thorns.

Haha, even though I read a comment further down before spotting him...the figure in the background scared the crap out of me.
Ohhh and how that woodgrain keeps catching my eye. Nyomnomnomthe lighting and the colors and the mouse and the grain.. I wish I could put this more intelligently, but I just love it all over. She looks so relaxed (and those flour bags look so comfy...) The perspective is dead on. I can just hear the little sniffs of the mouse down there. And that guy in the back is totally still giving me the heebie jeebies.
So much love for this piece. You can tell that you really poured yourself into this.

Wow my first couple of thoughts were along the lines of "Oh, this has a really great warmth to it, a nice cozy mood" then the creepy shadow man of doom found his way into my eye line. Brilliant.

Wood grain's pretty easy to pick up. I'd never really tried it like this before. I just looked at my desk for reference

Anyway, the atmosphere in this is so rich & full of depth. The colors are gorgeous, as usual, and everything feels cozy, almost cramped, like a store room should. xD
