This is what I think Zini looks like when he's pissed. Especially the end part.

Please read this if you are confused by the following story.

A loud commotion erupted a good fifty yards away. Everyone watching Reign flinched but did not have time to turn around and look before the blood-colored thoroughbred threw his head up. His ears swung forward and his nostrils flared wide. The vet, who had explicit instructions to turn tail and run if Reign even shifted wrong, stepped back hastily.

The noise was getting louder as Reign's head began to swing side to side. TJ risked a look to see all Hell breaking loose in the form of a tiny striped demon. As she watched, Zini broke away from the poor groom attempting to lead him to the bath station and galloped straight for them. Gasps emerged from everyone's lips and alarmed shouts rang out. Everyone scrambled to form a barrier as the vet raced out of Reign's quarantined paddock.

A soft whicker made them freeze.

TJ turned to look: Reign had actually moved closer. His head was cocked to the side but his ears were pricked forward. She shushed her companions. As they watched, his mouth opened and another quiet noise emerged.

Zini heard him that time and froze.

"What the--" Rafe started but was cut off by a good many hands slapping over his mouth. No one breathed as they waited for the pending showdown.

And that's when TJ realized their mistake. With his wild nature and El Diablo blood, they had not even given Reign a chance to be with other horses. The only others he had encountered as a young foal were the broods and he had wanted nothing to do with them. (Probably because they were "old and boring.") He had been quarantined early on and hadn't seen another equine since he was weaned.

Reign didn't hate other horses; quite the opposite. If that face of joy was anything to go by, he craved social interaction.

She gestured frantically toward a few grooms to grab Zini and lead him closer. For once, the young hybrid didn't struggle. He was entranced with the giant yearling who was currently bobbing his head at him. Never before had he been exposed to another colt. His only encounters with other young horses were those with his two female crop-mates, Nomad and Sensitivity.

Taking a major risk, she let the two colts greet each other from over the fence. When that went smoothly, she let Zini in the pen. A great heaving sigh emerged from Reign's lips and the stoic, heartless beast melted right before their eyes.

Strange but quiet noises--grunts and whinnies--emerged from his throat as he sniffed Zini all over. He was fascinated with the hybrid's spiky mane and took great pleasure in slobbering all over it. Zini looked affronted but confused, as if he was unsure what to do with the giant creep sniffing him.

And thus a friendship... of sorts, was born.

The two were put on probationary watch 24/7. A guard was to never take their eyes off them. If Reign looked like he was about to strike, they were to tranq him down and get Zini out of there.

Two nights of calm passed. Then three. On the fourth night around 8pm, the guard fell asleep. There were still hands walking around, but not many. Zini and Reign were grazing quietly in their paddock when the hybrid stepped closer to the thoroughbred yearling. Reign froze but Zini--oblivious as always--just kept inching closer, ripping up the spring clover sprouts. His muzzle brushed against Reign's foreleg.

The back hoof was raised, aimed in less than a second, and the blow fell on Zini's skull. The crack was loud enough in the silence to startle the guard awake. Seeing blood drip down Zini's brow, he dropped the tranq gun and ran for help. (He was not the brightest bulb in the bunch and was fired the following day.)

As the alarm was raised, all Hell broke loose in the paddock. Shrieks erupted from both colts and fur began to fly. Dark red fur.

By the time the other hands and managers reached the pen, the fight had ended. It was hard to see in the twilight, but Zini's striped form could be seen grazing on the delicious patch of grass Reign had been standing moments before. After some searching on the watchers' parts, they spotted Reign's darker form pressed against the far fence, nursing a few cuts and bruises. Aside from the laceration above his eye, Zini was unhurt.

A vet looked him over, stitched up his injury, and took x-rays of his skull. Not a single crack in the bone was found. Near as we can figure, his skull was stronger than another horse's due to his zebra ancestry. Risking much, we put him back in Reign's pen.

Over the course of many months, the two grew comfortable with each other. Zini was hit once more in the head, and once more we found Reign cowering in the corner with a fair share of bumps and bruises. After that there was no more Zini-skull-bashing.

TJ watched the two for a moment as they grazed quietly in the twilight. She then turned her Cheshire grin on Keegan. "Best. Purchase. Ever."

Keegan could only nod.
