Description
The discussion to rebuild Emma into a well tank was taken after her initial trials had been completed. As she lacked the power to pull mainline trains it was thought that the considerably more compact frame which could be achieved with a well tank would make rather fitting for lite branchline or commuter trains. She did prove to work a lot better under her new guise but the decision to give her an early retirement was still made. She was put into a shed for about a year before she was pulled back into wartime service. She survived the war and was once more put into storage, only occasionally steam to pull excursion trains. When the designer was asked why he designed the engine as a 4-2-0 instead of a more practical 0-4-0 or 2-4-0 or even an old fashioned 2-2-2 he simply responded, ‘that’s a good question’.Dimensions
