A mistake I still do very often is sketching right away, with no referencing beforehand,

This sketch really, really shows why: it consumes more time and makes you learn a lot less than just copying the reference and THEN sketching, essentially cementing the new knowledge bit by bit.

I do hope to get to a point where I can draw decently many subjects withouth having to look at a reference of every detail of what I want to draw, and I have to remind myself, a hundred times a day, that it takes time to build a visual library and draw confidently from there, but hey... this is a marathon, not a sprint!
