A cold chill blazed through High-Father Asker as he fed a fresh mana clip into his CC-49 Tribune longrifle, letting the weapon hiss as it absorbed the fresh stocks of arcane energy. About him, clustered shoulder-to-shoulder within the armored cabin of the Vandal, the other paladins of Sanction Division readied their weapons. Some mouthed prayers, others just absentmindedly stared, however, idle chatter between the soldiers was nonexistent. Asker momentarily held his breath, listening intently. Outside the vehicle, gunfire rattled and explosions boomed, neither hinting at the possibility of relenting.

The Vandal shook violently, roaring as the drivers viciously hit the gas. Wearily exhaling the air in his lungs, Asker cast a contemplative glance towards his own reflection in the chrome-plated sheen of his helmet. A hardened man of middle age stared back: gunmetal gray hair cut to a high-faded crop, his skin, a matte deepness in black, was wrinkled and scarred, framing an impassive face.

For the High-Father, such physical traits were attributed to a lifetime of war, of decades fighting a relentless foe who, despite best efforts, could not be tamed by conventional military might. The demons, in their unabating evil, had laid waste to the free nations of the world until only a solitary city remained. This city, this last dreg of refuge, had come under siege at last. Three days of ceaseless fighting had whittled the city's defenses down to a token force. The desperate few remaining humans, elves, and dragons alike, bereaved of command, lay scattered, hopeless.

There was hope, however, which, quite literally, lay in Asker's lap. There rested a cylinder container, containing within a small dragon egg ribboned with gold veins. Asker had vowed to protect the future High-King with his life, and even now, during the waning hours of the war, he was determined to keep true to his oath. The High-Father could hear the unborn hatchling within, like a gentle hand brushing the very edges of his mind. With it, he felt reassured and reestablished.

Asker sealed his helmet and thumbed his tactical HUD on. The other paladins followed in suit, powering on their armor which lit up the inside of the Vandal with variegated hues of green, yellow, and blue.

Static hissed across Asker's COMMS. Then suddenly, a distressed cry tore through the channel, scarcely audible over the hailstorm of shouts and gunfire.

*Sanction 1, this is Sanction 5, the demons have breached the Godsway! We can't hold them!*

Asker anchored his team's channel with that of the oncoming signal. "Sanction 5, this is High-Father Asker, tactical retreat, code tango whiskey oscar, is in effect! We are currently en-route to portal extract with High-King Amurnash; E.T.A. fifteen minutes, over!"

*Sanction 1, we won't be able to make it to the portal! The demons are right on top of us--*

A deafening roar, a mangled cry, these were all Asker heard before Sanction 5's signal completely flatlined. The High-Father cursed vehemently under his breath, mouthing a silent prayer for his paladins on the Godsway. The driver's voice blared over the COMM as the Vandal suddenly jerked to a complete stop.

*Sir, the road... it's gone.*

"Gone?" Asker asked in disbelief. "Activate the prompt."

A holographic projection ballooned inside the Vandal, eliciting frustrated murmurs and sharp, exaggerated whistling from the paladins. In front of the vehicle, the entire web of interlocking highways and freeways had collapsed, leaving a smoldering ruin of fire and debris in their wake. The city, which once teemed with the spirit of life, was now nothing but a desolation of rubble and battle. The entire sky was a macabre display of red and black, filled with plumes of fire, smoke, and the dazzling confetti of heated shrapnel. Teams of dragons clashed with demonic Ash Wings in the air, while the city's carcass was consumed by an unspeakable exchange of indiscriminate slaughter.

"Where's the nearest detour to the Administrative Complex?" Asker demanded.

*Through Phoenix Avenue, about ten klicks in the opposite direction. It'll take longer but that's our only option.*

"Exactly how long?"

*Thirty minutes, sir.*

"Roger that."

One of the paladins leaned forward, shaking her helmeted head. "Sir, Phoenix Avenue was hit hard. The demons are swarming that district."

"The demons are swarming every district." Asker responded matter-of-factly. "Bring the convoy around and hard line it to Phoenix Avenue."

*Yes sir.*

The Vandal roared and gritted its teeth as the convoy made a sharp U-turn back down the road. The High-Father linked his COMM to a broadband frequency.

"This is High-Father Asker to all remaining Sanction forces," he announced, "fall back, I repeat, fall back to portal extract. Link up with the Phalanx at the outer concourse and hold it for as long as you can. We are en-route with High-King Amurnash, E.T.A, thirty minutes."

With the convoy en-route to Phoenix Avenue, Asker stowed away the dragon egg, latching the cylinder securely behind his back.

*We have demons inbound!* The driver's voice cut through the cabin, *engaging hostiles!*

Rifles were shouldered, safety switches thumbed to automatic. The High-Father glanced about the Vandal's cabin as the vehicle's rotatory canons began spitting super-heated mana shells at oncoming demons, the helmeted faceplates of his fellow paladins masked determined expressions, they were ready.

At best I've written a single short story kinda sci-fi, and I don't consider that much experience. But I do like what you've got going here. Blending futuristic and magic? Is neat idea.

It's a headache to write, but I'm happy to hear that it's going well. Thanks.

An interesting blend of scifi and fantasy. Kind of like Doom meets 40K.

Nice descriptions of the war torn city

The look and feel was actually inspired from the game, "Hellgate London"

I've wanted to dabble in sci-fi for a long time, but I'm afraid I lack the scientific knowledge (or at least the vocabulary) to write it in a compelling manner. I still want to try, though; the story simply won't let me give up on it.

Exactly lol. The wording structure with sc-fi is so much more different than medieval fantasy. In my humblest of opinions, it's more difficult to master due to the technical nature of it.

I've always enjoyed reading the novels based within the Halo universe, although in my brain, they're not strictly sci-fi. I suppose, though, that they'd be a decent place to start. Destiny's lore is good for sci-fi terms, too.

I've got a few Halo books, myself. They're great to use as reference. Those authors really know their sci-fi.

This one was great, I was waiting for it ever since you mentioned it to me. (And then I didn't have the time to read it thoroughly *sigh*). I love the almost post-apocalyptic atmosphere you genereate, although the scenery never actually leaves the transport. I am very curious about the continuation! Me being the physics and engineering nerd I am, am very courious about the Vandal and the rifles as well, but I guell I'll just have to let my imagination do the trick.

A little comment towards the formatting: I also liked the idea of putting the radio messages between asterisks instead of quotation marks. It made reading and understanding the situation much easier! I have seen this before, but half forgotten about it.

I hope I do engineering and physics justice in the continuation, because my knowledge on describing sci-fi vehicles is slim to none haha. I'm gonna have to read up on sci-fi literature to figure out how other authors do it and use those samples as reference. In the next part, the Paladins will be exiting the Vandal, and I doubt describing the vehicle as, "a large, rectangular piece of metal with a rotary-mounted boom stick" will suffice. XD

The asterisks adds a real "radio" feel to the text. At least, that's what I always thought.

I fear you're right, the "boom-stick"-approach will most likely not be enough. I am a tank enthusiast myself and I pride myself in knowing quite a lot about the technical implications of such armored vehicles. So, if you have any questions, ask right away

For my book me and my lector have been reading for days about diamagnetism and its implications until we finally had a complete concept for a DOOR. (Although that door is mostly made of steel and has a volume of around 50m³). It was a pain to find something to make that gate move at all, considering it's weight (according to our calculations it weighs around 400 tons, not including the closing mechanism) and the fact that it is completely solid. We then decided to create a new element which is highly diamagnetic so we can let the gate hover with relative ease. We also were researching a lot on quantum mechanics and super materials to find viable means of generating large amounts of energy, build basically indestructible materials and so on. We want to make it as close to "theroretically possible" as somehow possible. That takes a lot of time and effort

Of course this does not apply to the magic part of the story, so there will be a lot of imposibillities

Yeaaaah, this is how it's most likely to go in the next part:

"Thwackcrackers, why does this tank shoot mana shells?"

Me: "Because... MAGIC!"

I have also read a lot about different concepts of magic. Usually magic concepts are divided in soft and hard magic. A soft magic system is easily introduced, because it has very little if any rules attached to it. A good example for that is Harry Potter style magic. If you have the talent and a wand you can basically do whatever you like. There is no real explanation as to why Voldemort and Harry are as powerful as they are, and there are no rules that aply in terms of magic in general. A hard magic system is much more complex, but in my opinion more rewarding as well .You have very strict rules that cannot be breached. In many systems the penalty for breaching such a rule is death. I a little more forgiving systems you just cannot break the rules resulting in a certian spell simply being impossible. Good examples for hard magic systems are Full Metal Alchemist (The Law of Equivalent Exchange) or Eragon where you die if you cast a spell that needs more energy than you have at the moment. You can set all the rules you like to limit the power of magic.
I certainly prefer the hard magic, because it can still be a powerful method to power up a character, without it being overly overpowerd and vague. I maen I just swing my magic wand and everything around me explodes in flames killing everyoone without exception and the story concludes is way too easy in my opinion, and in soft magic systems there is always the question why there is no way do do something, if everything is as easy as wiggling some twig around. ^^

Yes, somtimes I exaggerate with my research
