I looked, but Wikipedia ignored the karate used in 5th century BC by Buddhist Monks in India for self-defense, and the Hwarang-do in Silla (now Korea) in the 6th century AD. The Okinawa people merely improved it like Ford improved the assembly line, and Watt did the Steam engine.
I found those facts in the book "Contrary to Popular Belief" which has over 250 ther "facts" debunked.

Those lying jerks! Well Chacha says me that many different styles of karate originated in Okinawa, and Chacha is WAY more reliable.

It would appear the the people of Okinawa tweaked the karate methods used in Korea when it was Silla, but adapted it to its present day version to better protect themselves when the Japanese won't lest them use weapons. Meanwhile, the monks in India appear to have used a more primitive version.
I'd say India used it first.
Similar tweaking led to disputed origins for Chess, baseball, the Grimm's Fairy Tales, and kilts among others.
